Happy Memories Of Donna

I am so deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Donna. She looked so healthy and vibrant at the reunion. She was so enthusiastic about her dancing and performances. Donna persuaded those who were around her to get up and dance to the music that was playing at the Allegria on Friday evening. It was such a fun time. One would not even suspect that Donna had been facing illness. I would appreciate if anyone could share the contact information for her family so I can express my condolences.

Remarried

After my husband passed in 2015. It was a rough year. A good friend who was then living in Idaho and grew up in Huntington. He and I remained friends online and he proposed marriage to me.  We married pm Dec. 14, 2017 in Columbia,SC.

It was a lovely ceremony at Tree of Life in Columbia, SC. I get along super with my now 14-yr. old granddaugher and Larry's daughter who remain in Idaho.  I have imported him and his 18-yr.old cat to South Carolina.  The world is much brighter now.  All 4 cats are geting along fine.  My new name is Cheri Dawson.   We'll be attending the Jazz Festival in Sun Meadow this coming October.  The ceremony is on my facebook page.

Paul Kaufman Woodstock

Yes, we did drive to Woodstock.  Also in the car was Barry Nagel (a friend from college) and another person whose name I don't recall.  Because the roads were jammed and blocked, we pulled over and parked on the side of the road.  We rigged a lean to off the car using a sheet since it was raining and bedded down for the night.  The next morning we hiked to the concert grounds.

I'm sorry to share that we have lost another classmate, Donna Franklyn Berger.  Donna had a wonderful zest for life and amazing energy. So thankful that we could spend time together at the 50th reunion

Sad News

I learned this morning of the passing of Donna Franklin Berger. Her son posted her passing on Facebook. She had been battling cancer for the past five years. I regret not going to one of her Florida Follies shows to see her dance, as she loved to perform in them. May she Rest In Peace.

Lois Lang
Ira Nordlicht, I've got a question...

Did we drive up to Woodstock together in the summer of 1969? Who else was in the car? What happened?

Query

We received this message from both Mary Quater Leroy and Dr. DB Karron (class of '74?) and and thought some of you might want to contact them if you have info:

"I'm looking for Walter Dunn, my favorite guidance counselor and friend while In high school. I graduated in 1974, but his name came up in this web site. Where is he? I remember he retired to Hampton Bays.  He was a recovered paralytic, and walked with a distinct shuffle. I liked hanging out with him trading puns and stories. He kept me sane in the insane world of high school and was friends with my parents and through the passing of my dad, Mr. Abromowitz, Mr. Schneps, and My dad Edward Moses Karron."

I wish to share, at this time, the loss of another one of our beloved classmates, BETTE ROBERTSON GALLINARO.  She passed only this morning after a strong fight with cancer of which she was only diagnosed a week before our reunion this past May.   All my LOVE AND PRAYERS go to her husband,  another classmate, Bennett Gallinaro and FAMILY.  May Bette now rest in peace and for all that knew Bette continue to cherish all those wonderful memories of she shared.

Susan's concert

Deborah, I still play violin, thank you for asking! After high school I didn't pick it up for 30 yrs. Through a fluke, I started playing again periodically, in seasonal orchestras & other smaller events, including a weekly group just for the love of music. Two years ago I joined a year round full orchestra & it's just what I wanted. Love the conductor, who gives us impossibly hard music but each concert sounds great. Fran & her husband have been my biggest supporters (thank you Fran!). Southern CA Philharmonic.

1946?

Yes, 1946! December 22, 1946 to be exact.

'Hey Joe', you ask. 1946? Really? Yes kids, 1946 - really.

Here's how this time warp occured. James Josephs enjoyd a few years of biz success and decided it was time to move on up to the burbs. So come 1948 me, mom and my two brothers are yanked out of cozy, comfy Greenpoint, Bklyn and relocated to Long Island's most notorious shtetl-- Great Neck! Fresh air, trees, manicured half acre backyards and a progressive school system enamored with John Dewy and a dash of Maria Montessori to placate the uber educational liberals (they felt the Bern). But there was one fly in this North Shore ointment -- the cutoff date for kindergarten entrance was December 1st! My 12/22 arrival meant I had to wait till the following year to play in the block area, mold clay ashtrays (really) and discover how much I loved rocks, dinosaurs and girls. Guess the Bard was wrong when he penned ... "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves. For me it was that other Bard, the scruffy Minnesotta poet, who scribbled 'Simple Twist of Fate".

I headed out and into the world 26Feb47, so Irwin I've got you beat.  But is this really something that matters now?  It certainly did when I turned 18 and was legal to buy beer!

Some late news: A proposal of mine has been recommended for funding at the National Science Foundation but it won't occur until summer 2017 when our new ship, Research Vessel Neil Armstrong has passed all her (his?) sea trials.  So I don't think I will be retiring before that but it may happen soon after as starting to collect social security that year will push me into a new income tax bracket.

Re: Sneaker Ban

Yes, but I think the sneaker ban actually started in Jr. High (I remember Mr. Eaton making a big thing about not wearing sneakers). Anyway,  I remember the sneaker ban because one Monday morning I had a problem.  I had spent the previous weekend at a Girl Scout camping event. On Monday, my feet were swollen and my shoes didn't fit. I put on my sneakers, my mother wrote an excuse note, and nobody said anything to me about it all day.

A Milestone Moment

I Was reluctant at first to attend the reunion, especially since none of my close high school friends were going. Then I decided to go alone because a 50 year reunion is something not to be missed. I'm so happy I did!  My cheeks still hurt from smiling and laughing so much! I was greeted so warmly with smiles, handshakes, hugs, and kisses from West School and jr high friends, and from so many who were in the same homeroom or classes in high school.

Oh, at at the last minute my lifelong friend Margie Hession Viola,  who grew up a few houses away from me, decided to come to keep me company. She also had a great time!

Heartfelt thanks to the committee for giving me the opportunity to reconnect with so many friends from the past!

Oh, what a night!

I looked forward to this night for a long time and I have to say it met all my expectations!  I left with such a warm feeling as it was so wonderful to see everyone.  I know it has been said over and over, but I have to add my THANKS to the organizers....a great job was done by all.

To the kids of '65

I had the time of my life---

I ask myself the question as to why?...It was pure HAPPINESS...

Happiness to be alive and present and not on the rolling TV picture of classmates no longer with us.

Seeing and remembering the kids on our badges, feeling the joy of that time of my life.

I smiled, laughed, hugged, and "twisted the night away" at just Being.

My happiness at the reunion is the affirmation of life and just being, and the reunion sure made that true.

So, kids be well and thanks for all the new memories of my Long Beach 2015.

Thank you to all the organizers that made it happen!

More on the faculty

Since Murray mentioned most of the teachers I wanted to add Mrs. Beckman to the list of meaningful moments of the night.  She was one of the reasons I became a teacher and she helped me through some difficult times during my high school years.  She told me that after 50 years I could call her Judy and I said "Sure Mrs...aah Judy" It was wonderful to see her and be able to thank her after all these years

Eileen Nad
The Faculty

One of the myriad highlights of our wonderful reunion was for me the opportunity to revisit some of the faculty. I loved seeing coach Piazza who was still full of the enthusiasm and humor that marked his coaching days. I am still sure that he would run Donny H (don't even try to spell his last name) 30 times a game and hold our rifle armed QB Billy Henderson to 5 throws. It was like the old Michael Jordan joke. Who was the only man who held Jordan under 20 points per game? Answer: His UNC coach Dean Smith.

Great too to see Mr. Giagrande. I reminded him that Steve Schatz used to tell him that he, Steve, knew more about economics than teacher Frank and teacher shrugged his shoulders and agreed!

Mrs. Quinn was still vibrant and crazy after all these years. She was a neighbor and we talked about the life chats we had on my front porch with Dolph Ornstein. Between Mrs. Quinn and Dolph, I wasn't much of a contributor but it was great to tune in to their often for the time unconventional views.

And then there was Mr. Bogdan whom I thanked for saving my life by throwing me out of the woodshop in the 9th grade. He wrote to my parents that I had "no discernable mechanical skills and posed a danger to myself and others." So much for ban saw. I introduced him to my dear Kim and told him that her father was a carpenter and that she came into the marraige with our only tool box. When we bought a house Kim asked me in Home Depot whether we should buy a lawnmower and I asked her why.

Another aspect of what was a magical night. Murray

Oh, What a Time!

As a famous comedian, though not the one we graduated with, was known to say, "Thanks for the Memories!" To the incredible committee, I add my gratitude to the countless other notes of praise. What a joy to feel 17 again, to hug, reminisce, and to share how our lives played out over the last 50 years. Thank you dear classmates, dear friends.

What A Night!

I must join in on the comments to our Organizers, WooHoo! We all had a wonderful time in every aspect of our 50th Reunion! It was nice meeting up with those of you I knew. It was a perfect night! Good food, the music was alive, and our friend John Lee Cohen kept us all in step while dancing! Please remember me at our next reunion!,

Old Friends

It was a marvelous weekend!  My expectations had been low but they were wildly exceeded.  So great to realize that there were friendships in those tumultuous years and that they can be rekindled now.  Ladies, thanks you so much for your great organizing skills.  And thanks, particularly, to Gail S. Rosenberg who made me feel I would be welcome.

Jessica Borzilleri
Thank you from the bottom of my heart

First and foremost I would like to thank all of our beautiful classmates for their wonderful accolades regarding "our" 50th class reunion.  I have been overwhelmed and actually brought to tears by your wonderful words of gratitude and love.

Five strong women came together to create a weekend for all of us to remember. Thanks to technology we were able to search high and low for our wonderful classmates. Donna created an over the top website and as a group, we were able to have multiple Skype committee meetings.

For me, reaching out and touching the heart of our classmates and doing what we did was a labor of love. I for one will always hold the experience close to my heart and I know the entire committee feels the same way.  The ability to reunite with old friends, to make new friends, and to keep the communication open is truly a blessing.

Donna, Carol, Barbara, and Nancy are amazing.  Here we are 5 women 50 years later, all grown up, diverse in many ways through our own life experiences, and the combination simply jelled.  The objective was the same ,i.e., to bring all of us together with our ideas and thoughts with the focus on YOU, the Long Beach High School Class of 1965. We are forever young in our hearts and always in our school spirit.

Again, thank all of you  for your thoughts as It WAS an amazing weekend! More than  a week has passed and I still find myself smiling from all of the memories which we have now forever created in our minds eye.

Love and hugs,

Gail Schanker Rosenberg

A heartfelt reflection of an amazing weekend….
I have been trying to compose this for a week but keep weeping over my keyboard.

It is not often that an event exceeds one's hopes and expectations.

Before the Reunion Weekend, I had many wishes of what it would turn out to be (and many fears as well).

I am so enormously happy that we all got to smile at each other again.

There were so many people I hoped to see and spend time with, and even though I never got to talk to many that I wanted to,  it was amazing to just simply lay eyes on all of you, just to be able to stand back and look with so much affection at your faces.

It wasn't enough, but boy was it good.

Reading all of the beautiful postings that you have been sharing has been one of the best feelings I've ever had, no kidding.

It has been especially gratifying to hear from all of you who were hesitant to attend but thrilled that you came.

Thanks for making this so enduringly wonderful.

Love,

Thanks to you all

Thanks to the many who expressed gratitude to us ladies of the reunion committee.  I must say that not one minute of it seemed like work; instead it was an opportunity to reach out to some of the most important people in our lives – the people who were by our sides as we grew from little kids to teens to adults.  Saturday night was one smile after another, one hug after another, and beautiful memories that didn’t end.  My thanks to the others on the committee, and to every “kid” that joined us for this once in a lifetime celebration.  With Love, Nancy Miller Asselin

The Spirit of the Reunion Will Continue!

The reunion lasted only a weekend, but its impact will continue on and on.

I was one of the reluctant ones, hesitating to return since I had lost touch with classmates for 50 years; however, I was welcomed as we all were, with waves of friendship by those who are familiar to us as well as new acquaintances.  Again, a special thanks to the planning committee for a job well done.  And Murray Schwartz, I was disappointed that I did not have a chance to thank you in person for your contributions to the message board with your witty, well expressed recollections that encouraged many of us to share our thoughts.  May the spirit of the reunion continue by keeping in touch and planning other gatherings.

Special Wonderful Moments in Life

With the warm glow of the wonderful reunion still with me---

Reuniting with several classmates, dear friends, women who came to my sweet sixteen party in Long Beach---

Dancing the twist with them with great spirit, and with other classmates under wild colorful strobe lights -- dancing our hearts out -- the band pouring out its old time music, great familiar sounds ---

Has it been 50 years, really???!

Why it just seems like yesterday!!

To all the organizers:

Thank you for the wonderful program you put together. I had the best time... a smile from ear to ear all weekend.

I'd like to suggest an idea for your consideration... what if we continued this connection by sharing in various categories...for example...

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES:

What i learned in the last 50 years that i wish i had known in high school.... or....

What coming to the reunion REALLY meant to me....  or....

What teachers influenced me most and how that impacted my last 50 years... or....

Why and how coming back to Long Beach has impacted me....  or....

Best books I've read in the last 50 years that you too may like..  .... or

Great vacations I took in the last 50 years.... that you might want to also consider...  or....

Best wisdom I've learned and integrated into my life in the last 50 years that I want to share with you my classmates....

Etc. etc. etc.... the conversation could continue easily till our 60th!

 just my thoughts...

thanks again for a wonderful, wonderful event!!!!!!!

More Sharing ...

[Dear Classmates

We want to share with all of you the other messages we have been receiving "privately" (i.e. by all the other means available these days). As several classmates have written, the success of the event is the result of the friends who gladly infected each other with a sense of wonder and joy about getting together in Long Beach 50 years after graduation.  The Committe could not have done it without you.

I want you all to know how happy I am that you're all happy.

Donna]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Barbara, Gail, Carol, Nancy and Donna:

I don't know how I can add anything to all the wonderful things that have been said about the "event" (I wish I could find a better, more momentous, word) that you created last weekend to mark the 50th anniversary of our graduation from Long Beach High School.  You brought close to 120 people into the same room, after half a century (let that sink in!), to celebrate the 12, 6 or 4 years they had spent, together, being educated (in many ways) in "America's Healthiest City," our beautiful, lovely, reborn, Long Beach.

Hopefully, we have all led interesting and productive lives over these many years, but it was absolutely magical to be reminded that there is a community, in all our backgrounds, of which we are a treasured part; that people have warm memories of us that we have either forgotten, or never knew, that have survived for more than 50 years.  The screams, embraces and warm handshakes were testament to that.

I hesitated to leave the Lido Golf Club last Saturday night because of the feeling that there might be one more person to greet; one additional connection to celebrate; one more story to hear. There cannot be a more heartfelt testimony to an event than the fact that every participant lingered 'til the very end and hated to leave.

The satisfaction of a job well done was evident in all of your eyes and smiles and you have the deep gratitude of a whole bunch of people who "knew you when."

Here's to a wonderful and restful holiday weekend,

Morty

Dear All,

I wanted to thank you for all your efforts to make last weekend truly memorable .  Morty eloquently thanked you in his beautiful note and I echo his sentiments.  My wife and I are regular readers of TABLET  but did not realize that Morty  was the editor.

The weekend was special to me for a number of unrelated reasons.  My father who is 92 was released a few days before from a long stay in a rehab facility in LB after surgery and was able to be home with my mother who has memory issues.  My daughters were able to fly in from Chicago and Portland, OR and it is rare that we are all together in the same city.  Getting to see so many former classmates brought back many enjoyable memories.  It also made me reflect on the loss of a dear friend and classmate, Mitch Blazer who died way too early

I am sorry that there was not more time to visit and learn more about your lives.  Please accept my gratitude for putting this event together.

Amazing & Memorable

Hats off to the organizers of this great event.  The Friday night icebreaker was fantastic as well as the tour of our old high school.  The highlight was a beautifully decorated Lido Golf Club with old and new friends, great music and delicious food.  Thanks so much for this memorable weekend.  I wish all those far and near continued health and success.

Beyond Words!

There are so few words to express the exhilaration that I still am feeling.

Thank you again to the committee for planning this momentous event.

I will never forget it. Seeing you all again was just over the top!

We had quite an accomplished class. Our charge was to change the world, and we did.

That resolve came from our parents generation to us. They laid it out for us, and we ran with it. I did not stop smiling the whole week-end, and I am still smiling.

To all my dancing partners, guys and gals, thanks for every step!

We are all destined to do this again, and I hope sooner than later.

Love and good health to you all, Donna Franklyn

Donna Franklyn

I was so pleased to see so many of you and regret among several, not seeing Jeffrey Weinberg, Franette Scheinwald and Susan Propp. Perhaps we can find a way to get reacquainted.

I was also looking for Janice Crystal, Billy's wonderful and better half. But everytime I looked for her (turns out she did not attend) I found Piggy Stein instead. Not that Piggy isn't one of our great classmates, but Janice Crystal he is not! All the best, Murray

Hello everyone I must agree it was a weekend I will never forget😘😘  The best music ever and you can all tell I love to dance😜 my sincerest appreciation to everyone that worked so very hard to make it such a memorable event! Sorry if I missed catching up with any of you I did try to reach out to all! Sorry I didn't get a picture with Billy but he also was there to enjoy. Personally I was not planning on attending I'm glad I changed my mind. Didn't realize how much I missed our old town Long Beach will always be my home and all of you I will always consider my friends😍

A Huge Thank You To All The Organizers!!!!

What an incredible reunion!  So much fun...so many memories. ...and reconnecting with old friends in such a special way! I too have my Lido Elementary autograph books and I can't wait to reread them! Cudos to Pam Zidan who brought hers and a pic of our girl scout troop! I'm so appreciative to everyone who worked so hard to make this weekend happen!  Thank you!  And I plan to reach out and stay connected.  Thanks for making it easy with the emails on the program.  And also for the caps! I wore mine to the Laurel Sunday morning and enjoyed conversations with folks I missed the night before and because of the cap,  they reached out! All the best to everyone as we continue to grow and enjoy life! Let's Keep It Going! Just one more thing...so nice to see Billy being so gracious, never changing...still the same sweet guy, even if he didn't remember you!

What a night!

We have all thanked the Committee for all of their long hours and hard work putting together such a great reunion, however, I would like to thank all of the attendees for making this event what it was. Without "US" this wouldn't have happened. Thank you all for being there and partying like it was 1965 again.

Everyone

Danny Aronzon and I went to High School and College together. So I have spent years telling him why I do not want to go to this reunion or that. And the ones that Danny pled his case and got me to go I generally either hated or at least disliked to the point of saying never again.

This weekend's gathering was the only exception in my life. Kim and I both loved every minute. Thank you so to the Committee for nothing short of a brilliant effort. There were so many of you that I was thrilled to see and a few that sadly I never caught up with and wish I had the chance to chat with.

We were a great group of kids and given our collective life experience have evolved into a great group of adults. Just as I am writing this Richie Miller popped up on my screen. Great to see you old hockey friend and all my Point Lookout schoolmates the earliest of my classmates in Ms. Meyers kindergarten. With my garbage retentive mind I was able to tell each of you your roles in the kndergarten play. What I failed to mention was that as Raukus the Crow, I got stage fright and refused to get on the stage. Ms. Meyers had to read my line.

Thank you classmates of '65 and God bless us everyone. Murray

As someone who has done many events over the years, I can truly say that the organizers of our Reunion Weekend did a fantastic job! I can't thank the committee enough for making this reunion the best ever. Barbara, Gail, Carol, Donna, and Nancy did an amazing job and i know that i represent everyone that was there when i say this. What a great idea to be able to take home photos and hats as a momento for the evening. I heard that the photographer is still there trying to get a group photo of us. I wish her good luck. A few of us discussed the next reunion. We decided that the next reunion should occur in five years instead of ten. The main reason being that there won't be enough room at the tables for the wheelchairs and walkers lol. Seriously it was great seeing all of you and looking forward to seeing everyone at the next reunion. Steve and Janis Sfass

I am so sorry to be missing the reunion. It sounds like such fun and I was really looking forward to see everyone after 50 (still can't believe it has been so long) years. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's memories of years past and seeing pictures (I lost all of mine in a fire in 1971 except for my yearbook).  Enjoy your time together.

I still hope to get to Long Beach in the future when other travel commitments decrease.

Have fun!!  I am looking forward to seeing pictures.

Mike, You were one of the folks I most wanted to see again. Steve Lazar and Ellen Engel and Nancy Miller and Booby Cohen and bride and my dear Kim and I wanted to invite you to join us for Friday night dinner. I was asked to invite you and then read that you won't be going. Murray, there's still Ginos, and the just refurbished Laurel Lunchonette (Now Laurel Diner). There a number of new places to eat as well, in town like Corazon de Cuba  and many many possibilites in the West End (don't drive though, you'll never find parking).

I think it's still about two weeks before Social Bikes sets up on Edwards Blvd.  but there are three places in town to rent bikes for the Boardwalk. And it's a week before I.Fly Trapeze is ready to start sending the intrepid flying through the air with the greatest of ease, also on Edwards. But at least you'll all be able to party at Laurelton Beach without having to pay for the $12 single day beach pass.

Most regretable of all - at least for me - is that I won't get to see any of you. I've been told in no uncertain terms that I have to attend my niece's college graduation  this weekend or risk both family excommunication and their non-attendence at my own daughter's college graduation in two weeks over Memorial Day weekend.

I hope you'll all have such a glorious time that you won't be able to resist returning very soon, and maybe then getting to say Hi and reminisce.

Ride from Allegria

I'm staying at Allegria and can drive 2 people. A group of us are having dinner one block away at 7pm so it's not a problem. We'll be going to the beach cafe after dinner.

Is Murray OK? I haven't seen a message in a few days.

Alan Dunefsky

[Will the people who need a ride please contact Alan through his profile on the website.  Thanks -- The Committee]

Classmate Memorabilia

In anticipation of our class reunion, I dug into an OLD box of memories and found a few treasures I will be bringing with me to share. These include the commencement programs from West School (1959), Long Beach Junior High (1961) and of course LBHS (1965), my autograph books from elementary and Jr. Hi and a very few snapshots I was able to find. I would encourage others to do the same, if possible, as I think it would be fun to reminisce with them as well.

Just a thought.........

See you all soon!!

I, too, remember how much fun it was ice skating at the Long Beach Recreation Center.  I tried to skate a few years ago, at a birthday party my grandson was invited to; but alas, I just couldn't do it.  See you Saturday.

Rides on Friday night?

Please let us know if you are staying at the Allegria and have room in your car to transport some fellow classmates to the Friday night event at Billy's Beach Cafe.  Thanks.

It's Almost Here!

I can hardly believe how quickly the time has flown bringing us up to less than a week until we are together at this major milestone event.

I too wish to take a moment to thank the committee for their hard work & time. We are very fortunate to have such motivated, caring and  dedicated classmates who took on this challenge for the benefit of the LBHS Class of '65!

Please know that your efforts are greatly appreciated more than you could ever imagine.

THANK YOU BUNCHES....

Bicycle rental

Yes, Susan, I believe there are bikes to rent on the boardwalk, at least there were pre-Sandy. But I'm pretty sure things are back to normal in that regard. Others who still live in LB might know more.

Special Long Beach Memories

Our 50th Reunion has us reflect on a special time in our lives and reconnect with old friends and make new ones. And then there is also remembering the favorite things in Long Beach that we enjoyed.  Wondering if it is possible to rent a bicycle?  I remember how I used love to cycle the length of the boardwalk, and then go for a walk on the beach. I also have memories of the recreation center where I learned how to swim and looked forward to go ice skating during the winter months.  After living outside of New York for so many years, I am craving an authentic corned beef sandwich from the Lido Deli.  A special thanks to the  committee for all of their time and efforts in planning our reunion.  As others have suggested, may the spirit of the reunion continue with a LBH ’ 65 website.

Looking for Roommate

Looking forward to seeing everyone. I am flying in from Ca. and staying far out on Island, but i would prefer to be in LB over the weekend. Any woman, lodging in LB, wishing to share her room (and expenses) for Sat. (and Sun.) night, please get in touch. Thanks.

Continuing

I was also hoping we would continue to communicate with each other. This has been so much fun! I  belong to ,several LB websites including Class of the 50's, 60's & 70's, as do many of you, but I don't know most of the people. I find it amazing how classmates' names that I wasn't even friendly with conjure up their class photo in my mind. For someone who's email address is sueforgets, I find that pretty amazing. We are all part of a special group that no other can match; we have a history together & I don't want to lose that. BTW, I have also enjoyed becoming FB friends with many of you so please make sure we get to say hello at the reunion. Especially you,Joe Josephs--your photographs always make my day; and Donald, love your jokes to keep me smiling!

Keeping in touch

Class of 65, I have enjoyed reading all your memories.  Some I remember, some I have no recollection of.  I enjoyed seeing everones photo's they have posted.  Some I  recognized as adults, others I couldn't.  I will not be able to go to the reunion, and therefore will not see many of you who have kept up a dialogue on this site.  I was wondering if we, as a class, could keep this up on the Facebook page (Long Beach Class of 1965)?  I know not everyone does Facebook, but I'm sure a large percent of us do.  What do ya'll think?

Elyse (Goodstein) Jensen

[Elyse:  I'm glad you asked.  I plan to make sure there is a website for our class after the reunion -- everything on here can be moved to a new site, including Facebook.  Anyone interested in volunteering to help ,please contact me?  Thanks in advance, Donna]

Just a reminder that there are only "vitual tickets" to the Reunion Dinner.   We will have an attendee list at the door when you check-in.  If you can't remember if you bought a ticket, just check your classmate profile on the longbeachny1965.classquest.com  website.  See you soon.  [The Committee]

Thank you so fo arranging the bus tours. Sounds very exciting. But 30 to a bus strikes me that we are getting soft in our senior years. Why back in the day we had the 3:00 oclock bus and if memory serves ( and it may not) we used to fit 400-500 people in that thing. Murray

Well said, Janie & Fran. I think it's probably all the little details & things that cause the most frustration, along with those unexpected problems that always arise. It takes a certain kind of person who can still function & be productive in those circumstances. Thank you all!

Give a Shout Out!

We've been enjoying a "virtual reunion" since December 2013 , reconnecting, sharing memories, and posting photos past and present. Very soon many of us will be together again 50 years after graduation! This took an incredible amount of time, work, and a sincere commitment on the part of the Reunion Committee- Donna Selnick, Barbara Gans Russo, Nancy Miller Asselin, Gail Schanker Rosenberg, and Carol Spry. So sometime during the weekend when you see any of these ladies, take a minute to say thanks for making this special occasion possible.

The Saturday night dinner event starts at 6:00 p.m. -- not 7:00. We have former teachers coming to have cocktails with us.  So change the the time on your calendars.  Sorry for the error.

School

The school is very different. It's dark when you walk in, there are double doors in front of you that leads to the classrooms of the junior high. To the left and down the hall is another set of double doors, (I think that leads to the gym and auditorium), and to the right are the double doors leading to the elementay school, kindergarten and pre K classrooms.

Enjoy your tour.

[The School Tour starts at 1:00 p.m. and should last about 1-1/2 hours]

Redneys & other

Bobby Cohen, I'm sure we are all VERY curious about the "shnekin/schmekl" incident--you will have to come clean!

Redneys was probably the biggest memory of my childhood beach days. My family would walk to the beach from my house & walk home barefoot, sometimes along people's brick retaining walls, covered in blackish sand on our feet from the tar. Redneys was our favorite place where we ended the beach day or got a snack break in the middle, going in barefoot. I always got the wax bottles filled with colored liquid. Often "Mr. Redney" would come say hi, I believe (I started out there as a toddler). When I returned to visit years later after moving away, I was so saddened to see it gone. I will always remember Redneys. Funny, I hadn't thought about it until it was mentioned here, & it immediately evoked such a strong memory, really weird.

Susan Propp
School tour

i just signed up for the old school tour. I'm curious to see if my homeroom class (the fishbowl) still exists.

Redneys

Redneys was on Monroe at the boardwalk. My first job was at Redneys as a busboy. I was 14. Left there to work for George "Howdie" Kalin on the boardwalk.

Alan Dunefsky
Redney's restaurant

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER REDNEY'S RESTAURANT ON THE BEACH. I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT BLVD IT WAS LOCATED ON BUT I DID WORK THERE ONE SUMMER AS A WAITER. TALKING ABOUT SKIBALL ON THE BOARDWALK, I WAS INVITED TO A BARBECUE AT MY SON-IN-LAW TO BE'S PARENTS HOUSE AND IN THE BASEMENT IS ONE SKIBALL MACHINE IN WORKING CONDITION. I ASKED HIM WHERE HE GOT IT AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS A BAH-MITZVAH GIFT FROM ONE OF HIS PARENTS FRIENDS. WE PLAYED AND I ACTUALLY SCORED A 380. I WOULD DIE TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE IN MY HOUSE. MY DAUGHTER'S WEDDING IS COMING UP SOON AND WHEN I SAW THE SKIBALL GAME I TOLD MY SON-IN-LAW TO BE THAT HE CAN ONLY MARRY HER IF I GET THE SKIBALL GAME(LOL) . BOY DO I MISS THOSE WONDERFUL YEARS

What is everyone wearing on Saturday night?

What's the dress code for the 16th?

[We have described it as "Saturday Night Nice," on the website, because we honestly didn't know what to call it.  We have even had discussions within the committee about the difference between East and West coast definitions of cocktail party attire.  Let's just say that are not having a prom and we are not having a beach party.  Our "sources" tell us that many men are wearing sports jackets and women are wearing dresses or pants.  Most importantly, we want people to have a good time! -- The Committee]

To Murray, Holliday and National Blvd Workers

HI All

Murray: Thanks for your kind words. I have wonderful memories of our ABH days and many more...what could be better than being greeted by Shakespeare every day (oh fie...); we'll catch up next month on other more private matters (remember the shnekin/schmekl incident!)

Holliday: Who could forget prom night? (I still fall asleep in the car and early!); please remember the night before graduation....more on that too...!

To those who worked on National Blvd.: I was the "chair boy" on the beach for a number of years...my ears still ring from Izzy's "play skeeball! 9 balls, 5 cents, a nickel a game... we'll catch up..

Warmly, Bobby Cohen

Bobby Cohen
Thanks for the update!

So great to hear from you Carol.  Thanks for letting me know the bad news.  I'm glad the boardwalk has been restored  and look forward to the changes made.  Some memories are imbedded in my brain and although I had my doubts about my favorite "comfort" foods, I now live near Bethany Beach in a small town which reminds me so much of Long Beach....we do have all the "comfort" foods here! (except Kinishes!)  So looking forward to seeing you again.  Michelle

Michelle Leffler
BOARDWALK Ammenities

SORRY, Michelle and all those interested.  No skeet ball, IZZY Knishes, custard.  There is ONE major bathroom concession around Laurelton.  You have the Allegria to stop in for a "drink".  No soda, shakes or fizzies.  After the storm, there has been a lot lost as you would remember.  The city does have plan for 3 other bathroom facilities to be installed other than Port-a-potties. Means of food vendors to be located in 2 other locations aside from Edwards Blvd location.  The boardwalk is beautiful and life has ben returning.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Kalin's

And I worked at Kalin's for two summers! George Kalin was the "Howdie man". I served a cone to Bobby Kennedy when he campaigned on the boardwalk. I'll always remember how blond his hair was. (And I haven't had any cotton candy since working there.)

Alan Dunefsky
The

Does anyone who lives around Long Beach know whether or not they have put back any of the Boardwalk amenities, ie, custard, skeeball, kinishes, etc. or is it all bare now?  I enjoy reading everyone's comments and look forward to seeing everyone as well as Long Beach.  It's been so long and "age" has fogged a lot of memories but I will never forget our high school days and how much Long Beach has remained on my mind!

Boardwalk follow up to Murray

On a lighter note, I was a star worker at "Seidel's SkeeBall" for over two years. I not only became a SkeeBall wizard, but also enjoyed my ability to give out twenty nickels for a dollar in record speed. By the way, Kalin's custard was the best soft ice cream stand on the boardwalk. They also had a great lemon Italian ice.

can win the game for the team, and not be the one with a medal,i just wanted to win,yes the irish boys on the team introduced me to the meaning of    bar   for the irish it is the center of the world, and the girls had freckels and they had their own everything and yes i loved that,by now i was in every town on long island, mostly restaurants, greek diners,german,italia,....life was good but i had no idea what next,....one of my soccer buddies, his mom lived in ottawa canada,he invited me and we took my car and drove to visit his mom, well ottawa is a copy of london on a smaller scale, perhaps one of the nicest cities in the world, with water canal and tulips, rivers all around just spectacular, only winter is very snowy,as a joke i applied to transfer only 40 dollars and two weeks later i was a student at the university, majoring in economice with minor in classical russian literature, well from economics i was learning business, and russian yea they all criminals and alcoholics,so was for everything was reaching its peak,.....further schooling was over for me,the way it was presented to me i wanted real life experience, nothing ever happens like in a textbook in business, the winter in canada is like being in siberia,i love them both but i wanted new york,ok i was in new york with a job working for canadians, that was one week,i was in offise of a nice man dealing in my goods,he said costume jewlry is the hotest item now,he introduced me to a man and i was working for him next day,now i was getting experience, a new york traing onu hour and you out on the street working,i was so happy, shleping these two double cases of costume jewelry cases all over manhattan by foot,i got paid 150 per week, communiting in my brand new caddilac, tolls, parking, lunch,i was not good at math but i never had money, less than 90 day later,i was in my office as a independent, with no money,no customers and no goods to sell, but i felt very confident, next day i was at one factory in nyce asking the owner for a job,he was like what,he said he dont know anything why do i need you,i told him please you the only one i know,he fed me the entire day and at 6pm he gave me the job,i made very little money with him,but i became one of the biggests reps in that field, next time i will expand on  that,,,ps yes one of 14 factories that part of my marketing, was the owner of recently closed kosher fish More Pictures, Please

Since my memory of my LBHS years seems to be rather fuzzy, I'd love to see more photos of you all. I think my strongest memories of people are from my homeroom. Steve Raskin, I remember leaving study hall with on a pretty regular basis, to go hang out in the library. Maureen O'Rourke and I had lots of laughs on JV cheerleading. But, so many of the memories people have posted make me feel like Mandy Kaling in her book, "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" I've also enjoyed reading it all. And, Michael W's bio is fascinating. Thank you for sharing.

Bobby Cohen - This is Your Life!

Hey Mickey, I remember Ralph Kiner, but now you sound like you are doing a Ralph Edwards imitation.

"Bobby, this next voice is someone who you  double dated with at your Prom. He still remembers the night and you almost falling asleep on the drive home each time he hears the song, "Mrs Brown, you've got a luv'ly daugh'er". Welcome your high school friend, Michael Holliday Cohn!"

Bobby Cohen

Hi Bobby, In case you need to get reaquainted perhaps I can help. You were one of the nicest people in our high class. You were a great dancer and one of your favorite songs to dance to was "My baby does the hanky panky." You were a top student and won a scholrship from the Pythian Sisters. You were a regular for basketball at the Schatz Stadium and joined in for the free soda and pretzels. You worked at the Laurel Luncheonette and learned the language in no time."Stretch 2, draw 1 and 86 on the RB. BLT down with mayo to travel." We worked the chair concession at ABH and each felt as strongly about Maddie Neuman of "clean beach, clean area"  fame and of course Deacon the Garber Man. At ABH the customers called you "Stony" or of course the ever popular "Boy." Now I need to reaquaint--I look forward to seeing you at the reunion. Murray p/k/a Little Mickey

Transportation through Rhode Island on Friday?

Hi All,

Just beginning to figure out travel logistics to the reunion. My wife and I are wondering if anyone is driving down through Rhode Island the Friday before with room for us. My email is rcohen1511@aol.com

Welcome all "hellos" as well, as I get reaquainted!

Warmly, Bobby Cohen

Bobby Cohen
Mr. Maglio

Mr. Maglio was a great teacher, Donna. And lots of fun in class. Unfortunately, unlike you, I never learned a thing from him, as he frequentliy liked to point out. He gave me two parts in shows, as the Mayor of the Munchkins freshman year in the Lindell Building and as Hugo Peabody sophmore year. But he made me recite my solo in the Wizard of Oz and he cut my two songs and duet with Kim in Birdie.

Both shows were undeniably much better that way.

Camp Thunderbird Alumni ?

Hi Everyone, Remember Stan Galowin and Camp Thunderbird?

Camp Thunderbird was in North Egremont, MA, near Great Barringtn.

The years we spent there were memorable and wonderful.

I learned how to play tennis there, and still lucky enough to play tennis

in Boynton Beach four times a week!

We did two great shows as well, The King and I and ByBye Birdie, with

Maddy Freeman. My last show at LBHS was under th direction of the then

briilliant Mike Maglio, where I played Ursula Merkle! and Maddy Freeman played Rosie.

What I learned from Mr. Maglio still influences me to this day, as I am still doing

singing and acting in regional theaters, as I did in New Jersey before moving to South

Florida.

Would love to hear from you Thunderbirders!

Long Beach Visit - Notes

Sue, while I too miss the trees that were finally taken down this past Fall, one positive is that the trees taken down were mostly of one kind (ash I think) many of which suffered especially from the salt water inundation of Sandy. A program set to begin next month will be replanting six different types of new decorative trees at the sites where the old ones came down. So by the time of the Reunion you might get to see the first new trees planted.

You might not have had time to notice but many if not most of those memorial gardens in the middle of Park Avenue were named for anddedicated to teachers who taught while we were in high school. Lots of famiiar names.

The sign for the "new" Lido Theatre is a point of contention/speculation in town. That sign exhorting all to look for the grand re-openning went up exactly one year ago today. The owners claimed that they would be re-opening last Spring, but never explained what happened. People in town are still hopeful but there's still been no word or explanation from the owners. Similarly, the old hospital (where my sister was born) also closed down due allegedly to the hurricane. Now South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside has announced that they will be openning some sort of 24 hour clinic emergency room. But it won't deal with serious trauma, stroke or heart attack. If one of those happen, residents will have to go by ambulance to the hospital in Oceanside, and hope it's not during a  rare period of heavy traffic on Long Beach Road.

The ghost of Nathans is now even further up the road in Oceanside and is now the size of the avereage Arthur Treachers, which by the way is what shares the space and what they sell instead of all the wonderful fish and clams and oysters that we used to be able to get in the Old Nathans.

But Peters Clam Bar is still there, and a block or two closer to town a great fish market and sea food restaurant.

Long Beach visit

Just spent 9 days in LB for the first time since 2012. I kept driving past my mother's house since the street, as many others, had all the trees cut down after Sandy, supposedly because they all suffered root rot. So sad--I watched those trees be planted & grow to great heights. Was so busy helping mom in her new assisted living place that I never got a chance to see the West end--when we were in school, it wasn't a hopping place like I hear it is now (I'll be there on Fri. night @Billy's). Didn't get to Gino's but I did get a sandwich for the plane at Lido Deli--YUM! Passed several memorial gardens on Park--Florence First (East school), I forget who else (of course), & a street sign that said Cantor Mendelsohn Plaza where East End/Cong. Bat Sholom used to be. First thing I did when I arrived was to make my brother stop at the boardwalk before getting me to the house. It was dark & cold but I just had to go up there. Never got to it again but I will in May. It's nice but of course I miss the old one. When you look from afar, you see steel railings on the bottom, not the big dark brown wooden pilings. They are bringing back concessions, & the Lido theater says "Watch for our grand re-opening." Nathan's apparently moved once again, further north, opening on March 26.

Garrett Marsh

No, not a forgotten classmate.

For many or most of us, the great attraction of Long Beach when growing up was the beach, the boardwalk and ocean. My family briefly lived in the canals, and some friends had boats, but most of the time,  Reynolds Channel was just a gateway to other places or what we passed over while sitting in the  LIRR going to the City.

Since I moved back to Long Beach a few years ago, I discovered Garret Marsh,  and the many shallow channels and small hassocks and islands north of Reynolds Channel that stretch from Island Park to Freeport. It is filled with colorful wading shorebirds: herons, egrets, terns, bitterns, cormorants, oyster catchers, plovers, many ducks and my favorite, the large ospreys in their elevated nests. Beginning in the Spring I like to go kayaking in the Marsh to paddle up close to them and see them in their natural, undisturbed habitat. It's like a National Geographic tv show, close to my back yard.  If so inclined you can also fish off a kayak.  It can be peaceful and relaxing or invigorating and exciting, depending on what you want and there are also great bayside views of the old high school, golf course, the Hospital (before they tear it down) the LB Bridge as you never saw it and houses along the Bay.

If you’re (not even all that) adventurous, the weekend you’re here, think about going to Empire Kayak, in Island Park down the street from where the old Texas Ranger used to be and Peter’s Clam Bar still is, and rent a kayak (they even have paddle operated Hobies that are easy to use) to paddle for a hour or few hours in the Garret Marsh.

So sorry I had not answered earlier your thought provoking message about what amused both you and me on those tv days. Bowling for Dollars was hosted by Mets broadcaster Bob Murphy my peersonal favorite. I was making $1.40 an hour wokring at the skating rink at the Rec Center and probably could have financed the whole Channel 9 production. "Here's 8 dollars for you and 8 dollars for your pin pal."

Now Bedlam from Boston, and Championship Wrestling from Capital Arena were show stoppers. Remember Nature Boy Buddy Rogers, Strutting Bob Davis, Skull Murphy, Brute Bernard, Dorey Dixon--Calypso Champ, The Graham Brothers, Dr. Jerry and Eddie. Wow. One night the Graham Brothers were scheduled for a tag team againt Skull Murphy and Brute Bernard. Well it appears that Dr. Jerry Graham was at a medical convention and did not get to the bout ontime. This left Eddie at a decisive disadvantage with his two opponents and predictably he was getting the tar beaten out of him. Then when it looked hopeless the doors swung open and out came Dr. Jerry in street clothes (complete with Hawaiian shirt and suitcases in hand.) He climbed into the ring, hit both over the head with suitcases, recussitated his bro and led them to victory. Their followed one of those classic interviews with announcer Ray Morgan. Murray

Under the Boardwalk

That is an amazing video, Janie.  Thanks so much!  The boardwalk was always a exciting place for me.  I didn't get to go there all that often and when I did, I loved it.  Most of the time I had to sneak out to go to the beach--and I did that a lot in those high school years.  One fun summer, Gerry Manzella and I used to spend time hanging around with Michael Cohen and Ron Gertz when they were working renting umbrellas etc.  We told our parents we were at each others' houses....

Brought my two girls to the beach about 25 years ago.  They loved it.  And then came with my youngest when she was a teenager.  She had a chicken salad sandwich at a deli there and remarked, "Mom, it tastes just like yours!"  I said, sure, they probably use Helman's mayonaise too.  But she said no, it's not that.  It has the exact same amount of celery, the chicken is cut exactly the same size, just like yours.  I laughed.  We never know where our influences may come from.

Jessica Borzilleri

I remember playing skee ball, on the boardwalk, and can't understand why my grandson, age 9, doesn't love it as much as I did.

Boardwalk memories

I do remember getting dressed up and walking with friends from Neptune all the way down to Seidel's esp. on Rosh Hashana after we went to Picus' deli to buy a garlic pickle. I've never tasted any as good as those pickles.

Frozen custard

Murray (not easy to forget as that was my dad's name),

It was frozen custard - Waller's - was reviewed nationally in several NY newspapers.

Rita's frozen custard franchises sells it now.  Whenever I get to the west side of town, you can be sure I inhale those calories. LOL

Holly, Janie, Susan and Adrienne

You evoke such wonderful memories of growing up in Long Beach and how privledged we were to do so. People still travel miles in traffic to get a taste of the boardwalk and the beautiful white powdery sand beaches. And in our day, life was buzzing over, under around and through the boardwalk. I never got to cash in my tickets at Sliedel Skeeball (which I preferred to Faber's for no apparent reason that I can recall). I wanted to get a teddy bear for Cathy Tash on whom I had a most unrequited crush. May she rest in peace.

And you reminded me of the rides. I grew up on them, the little boats at age 4 and the roller coaqster at age 14. It wasn't a very big roller coaster--if Coney Island had its Cyclone then this baby was the Tropical Depression. But like its bigger counterpart, I got just as dizzy and threw up just as reliably.

One question for the class. Next to Sliedels was a place that sold what most of the world calls soft ice cream. Didn't we call it frozen custard? Murray

Murray Schwartz
Drifters/Long Beach

I second Susan in thanking Janie for posting the u-tube link. While none of us would remember when people dressed up to walk the boardwalk, we were certainly there with the rides, skeeball, knishes, and chance to also go under the boardwalk. My kids remember the rides and skeeball from our many summer visits to my parents' house. No family is there anymore, so I don't get back. My husband and I walked the first section that was rebuilt once, when it only was about 4 blocks long. Long Beach was a great place to grow up.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.  Many of us have had wonderful memories "under the boardwalk" and practically living on the beach from June till August.

Drifters/Long Beach

Janie, thank you so much for sharing that wonderful clip; I hadn't seen it in Rob Rothman's postings. There were some of my absolute favorite things--the rides, sledding down the boardwalk ramp, walking under the boardwalk on the cool shaded sand, boardwalk games........I'll be visiting LB in 4 days, haven't been there since just before Sandy. Then again in May, of course!

Party memories ;)

All I remember about that Oct. day is that a yellow rose bloomed past it's supposed bloom time.

Margo, I do remember that my mom's chocolate birthday cake is still the best. I rarely make it. It's easier (bad back) to buy a boxed dark chocolate cake, add homemade icing and grape jelly between the layers. My Aunt Rose used strawberry. I once used orange marmaled and decorated it with Mandarin orange pieces.   Meri only uses the grape.

If I were coming to NY, I'd bring one. Not sure how it travels. It sometimes doesn't do well in my car on the way to templ. LOL

Memory is a funny thing. I also can't remember much from yesterday but I DO remember kissing Ricky Weinstein during a game of spin the bottle at Phyllis Levine's party in 6th grade. I'm just not sure who was the kisser and who was the kissee!

Elise Klein
Elise Klein Gelbman

Elise, Your observation that Cheri's father organized our maiden voyage at Spin the Bottle and that he was a psychiatrist is the stuff of great comedies. Do you recall if your spin landed my way or vice versa?  If not, one of us owes the other a kiss at the reunion. I don't think my wife Kim would mind. Murray

Murray-

I was at that birthday party, too, and remember playing "spin the bottle" for the first time.  Cheri's father supervised.  He was a psychiatrist.

The first thing I remember you ever telling me was that Cheri was French--say as opposed to Sherry. I went to your birthday party long about the sixth grade and for the first time in my life played "Spin the Bottle." It made me realize that kissing girls was not nearly as horrible as I had imagined. I remember your mother being a very nice lady as was your older sister Merry. Sorry you won't be at the reunion. Allan Weiner's passing

Allan was very good friend of mine.  we were on the soccer team together. I saw where he is listed in the In Memoriam list.  Allan was very particular about his privacy. He had a photography studio in Manhattan.  He later moved to another state.  Can anyone verify the veracity of his passing?

It's impressive that you can remember those wonderful cartoon moments. My brain was probably too cluttered with all the other "high brow" endeavors I had. Between Bowling For Dollars, Gillette Calvacade of Sports, and Bedlam From Boston ( Killer Kowalsky with his claw hold) , I hardly had time to do my homework. In fact, I didn't.

Happily, I had Mad Magazine to help me with my current events, and Classic Comics occasionally got me past a book report.

And who can forget the episode "How Green is my Spinach" when Brutus talkedPopeye into throwing out hsi supply of spinach. The can, personified, told Popeye "You'll be SORRY" and sad to report, he was.

Michael, You are wonderful. Yes it was quite a party and we were both blessed to see it in our lifetimes. I met Leslie Goree and her brother Michael at summer camp when I was 10, Michael was 10 and Leslie was 12. Both were brilliant and thoughtful and very nice children We soent 3 or 4 summers together. Michael was more the music buff and later was nominated for an Oscar for the music from Fame. Leslie had great talent as well but loved tennis more. But no doubt You Don't Own Me became a feminist anthem, deservedly so.

Can you recall the greatest show in town? It's Huckleberry Hound for all you guys and gals. Melligah Gorilla and Top Cat were up there as well. I also loved Bullwinkle and Rocky and being fairly immature, I stayed with the theme in college and watched George of the Jungle. Same narrator as Bullwinkle. Best of George: Some ruffians were infesting the jungle with man eating plants. The two best lines: First the narration: "This being a short episode the plants grew very quickly."  The second when the narrator told George that the ruffians were responsible, he said: "you guys really from Ruffia?" Murray

Murray Schwartz

I showed my grandchildren the programs. It's amazing what you can find on you tube and american classic tv.

Barbara Sanders

Going from the sublime to the ridiculous, Slate Magazine has an article this week about Kukla Fran and Ollie, a gentle almost fey puppet show that ran for 10 years on national TV that  I used to love when I was young. It would never last even half a season today.  It was also a week that saw the 40th reunion of Saturday Night Live, which most of us probably watched a generation after we left high school.

In between those shows, while we were in high school was ......Soupy Sales, whose antics with Pookie, White Fang, running gags and shtick became a recurrent mime for many of us back before we even knew what the word mime meant. And during our last year, there was even the infamous green paper scandal.

(And then there was Yogi Bear "Hey Hey, Boo-boo!" and Deputy Dawg.)

Have any of you ever tried to explain the appeal of those shows to your kids?

Michael Cohn
Quite a Party

Murray, we have lived through the beginning and flowering of some tumultous and huge culture changing times. Just the past day or so, Leslie Gore died at 68. Her song "You Don't Own Me" came to be viewed as  before-it's-time anthem of feminism. Although at the time, I think "It's My Party" was the song most of us probably felt more attuned to.

It certainly has been quite a party, although rather than cry, I feel pretty lucky that it all happened to me.

Michael Cohn

Our Class of 1965 lived through the most tumultuous effort for civil rights and the dignity of humankind since the Civil War. 50 years later the rights and freedom's of people of color have been fully established though they need to be remembered and fought for every day.

In a century from now some other looney bird--not I-- will recall with the same levle of awe the winning of the battle for gay rights. Another victory for indidual freedom over darkness, ignorance and stupidity.

In our high school days we did not think much about gay rights but we sure had our gender based stereotypes. It was 9 years before Title IX and girl's sports were underfunded and largely ignored. And I was enrolled in shop with all the boys while the girl's learned girlie things like sewing and cooking.

Of course no one taught my hormones what to do and I was promptly asked to leave the wood shop, The teacher was fearful that I would cut off my hands in something called a ban saw. Wrote Mr. Bogden to my mother "Murray has no discernable mechanical skills and poses a danger to himself and others." I to this day love to cook, but the thought of my joining up with home ec class would not have been possible even with an affidavit of heterosexuality!

How the times were changing. Murray

Dude ranch and Heckshire State Park

We were absolutely at the dude ranch in our freshman year of high school. There are pictures to prove it  (except we are having trouble locating them) but I know they exist. If you are lucky enough to still have your yearbook you can see some. One in particular is in the very left hand corner of the page of kiddie pictures above Lenore Futterman's photo. I can tell by my hair I was in 9th grade.

As to Bear Mountain and  or Herksire State Park..."we" as a class can never walk that way again. I don't remember which one we got into so much trouble and were banned for life (just kidding -  hmmm maybe not).

I noticed Bob Nierman among our class missing. I hope he appears. He was my next door neighbor with a wondeful family including his dear mother Elizabeth and a great Sheltie named Try. Robert grew up to be poised and increbibly witty and played Tulley Bascom the lead in our play the Mouse That Roared and was a perfect Walter Dunn Intredid Guidance Counselor in our senior skits. Next to Billy Crystal as Doc Samuels, Ellen Engel as Senorita Santoni and Barry King enforcing the one way hall rules, Robert stole the show as the clodhopper who sent everyone to Sullivan Community College. He threw darts to pick the colleges. From Bye Bye Birdie he inspired his students with the notion that they were going to Sullivan. "How can anyone be, half as fortunate as me, we'll say its the most, twice as good as Post, My Sullivan." Murray

It is worth checking VRBO or other vacation rental sites for your lodging - It is off season and I was able to book a 3 bedroom house on the same block where my dad built our first home - The cost is less per bedroom than any of the hotels - The catch is you might have to book a minimum of three nights - Get a group together and have your own slumber party - You might want to watch the movie "The Big Chill" before you go for it - I look forward to seeing you all next spring - Happy forthcoming holidays !

Avoid the Long Beach Hotel on E Broadway

My wife and I had to stay there on a last minute trip to LB to help with ailing parents. I would urge everybody to avoid it.  The Allegriae is very nice.

Long Beach Hotels

Hi Susan,

Sadly in Long Beach, the pickings are slim. We did the best we could with what we had to work with. There are choices outside of Long Beach itself, but I for one want the flavor of my old home town as much as possible. So I will stay in Long Beach.

It is all about the reunion, and that's how we should all look at it.

Warmest Regards,

Gail

The LB Hotel is the former Jackson. Very old, very small, that's all I know. I'm considering staying there anyway. The Allegria had many negative reviews about the AC not working, & poor customer service, but the LB Hotel had complaints too. I know you always find complaints but I didn't see too many kind words for either. Wish there was a "normal" hotel in LB.

Long Beach Hotel and more...

Michael,

Thank you so much for your input. If you look on our website to the left, you will see that there is a subject "For Travelers (Far and Near)."

The information has been there for months. The Long Beach Hotel is available, and and the information is posted with a special rate (for a block of rooms).

Again thank you.

Hotel

There is a second hotel now in Long Beach besides the Allegria. I haven't seen the rooms only the lobby and bar area,  so I don't know what it's like or if it's decent or the rates. But given the date of the Reunion, I wonder if the organizers might consider talking to them about a group rate? It's the Long Beach Hotel (I think it's the renovated Lincoln) on the North side of Broadway, and Lincoln, 405 East Broadway.  516 544-4444. If people or the Reunion organizers are interested, I'd be willing to check out the rooms or talk to them.

Diane,

Yes the photos are simply terrific, but I can't take credit for them. They belong to Roxee. I just uploaded them for her.  It's hard to believe she still has them (and many I did not upload). However, what I do have is my pink leather autograph book from elementary school and you signed it! I will send you your signed page in an email.

JFK

Murray, we discussed Kennedy awhile back. I just checked because I thought maybe it was on FB or I imagined it. You have to keep scrolling back if you want to read it. I still have the Newsday from that day.

Susan Propp
President Kennedy

The defining global moment of our high school days was the murder of John Kennedy. I was in 7th period history class with Ms. Manz when we all heard the news from Dallas. It was a Friday and school ended for the week and I ran home and watched CBS news and Walter Cronkite in tears telling us that the President was dead. The weekend saw Jack Ruby murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the funeral with the riderless horse, John John saluting and us getting used to the idea that LBJ was our new President.

We were invigorated by JFK's youth, energy and humor. Eisenhower, the only President we knew before was a war hero but not our hero. We could start our politcal invovement with a hero we could dig. Nancy Miller wrote a brilliant piece in our school literrary magazine about Presidential hero heaven with Washington and Linclon among others and how JFK was now one of them.

That is my view. What do you think? Murray

Come to Reunion!

Trying to decide whether to come to OUR 50th Reunion?  Hesitating because you're coming alone; haven't kept in touch with any of your classmates; would like a roommate to keep costs down; or some other reason?

Please let us know  -- just contact us through the ContactUs link -- and we'll try to erase all doubts.  We really want you there!!!

Hey Dave

Thanks for remembering the Zoombie Jamboorie!!!!!

You are absolutely right!!!

HEY BETTY

The name of that song was "Zombie Jamboree"....

"Back to back, belly to belly, well I don't give a damn,

Cause we done that already, back to back, belly to belly at the Zombie Jamboree."

You can find it on one of the earlier Kingston Trio albums.

Most fondly, I remember playing some percussion back up with a group of guys who were friends of my dad's.  We called ourselves the Weirdos and played strange instruments like the washtub bass, mandolin and other home-made and store bought music makers.  Our stage was the beach at Laurelton and we used to get quite a crowd when Paul Simon showed up one day and became a regular with us.  He was about 20 at the time and not yet launched his career.  We sure did let it rip and I remember a song he used to sing called, "Back to Back and Belly to Belly"

Do any of you guys remember our jams on the beach?

Betty Levy

Well, I'm embarassed.  I have to say, Murray's memories of me are way more impressive than my own; I don't remember starting the softball team, although I do think I played a decent 2nd base!  I also have to correct the record about my father: he was with the Boston Braves, not the Red Sox.  Thanks to him, I found out one of the great secrets of life, which is that good pitching always beats good hitting. He was MY hero!

Heroes

Both Barbara and Billy have done amazing things to make our world a better place. It warms my heart to think of their wonderful accomplishments. I too am proud to say I know them.

But let us not forget our classmates that fought in wars to protect our freedoms who survivied with scars, or tradgically lost their lives.

There are many people in our class who have made a difference, whether in medicine, education, law, literature, technology, finance, or music. The list goes on and on.

We should reflect, admire, and thank them all.  We have an amazing Class of 65!

Gail

Gail Schanker Rosenberg

Thank you for sharing that about Barbara.  Very refreshing to know that some of our classmates actually made a difference in this country.

Adrienne Rose
High School Hero

We were a remarkable class in the revolutionary 60's. Hardly was the ink dry on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when we sent into a turbulent world marked by Vietnam, race riots and the feminist movement, a revolution both in rights and in perceptions. It was too early in the era for us to be vocal, militant or even obnoxious. And one wag trasferred out of Union College saying they did not riot because they didn't give gym credit for it. But it in high school when I became certain that  there would never be a place in my life and my world for racism or sexism.

Our class was blessed with two of my heros who lit candles and showed the way. And both grew to become extraordinary citizens and influencers in the crazy years that followed. Billy Crystal did more for my becoming sensitive to the common bonds of humanity than any person on earth save perhaps for the one he imitated so well, Mohamed Ali. And Barbara Gans was a quiet voice for Title 9 seven years before it became the law. She started and successfully led the first girls' softball team and made claims (pioneering in the day) for equality. She had the baseball genes which she got from her dad, Harold, a Red Sox pitcher, but the courage and prescience came from her  heart and her head.

With great admiration. Murray

Oldies but Goodies

I'm with you Jessie--I loved all those songs. I never knew the group names nor many of the lyrics of others (Louie Louie) until much much later. We just sold most of our record albums--so sad--but I converted many to CD's & wanted the room. Still have the 45's.

LONG BEACH-- ROCK'n'ROLL CAPITPAL OF N.Y.

What about our local, semi-famous THE ILLUSION. They played often at Leone's and got alot of airplay on radio. We also had THE UNSPOKEN WORD. Their record made it to the top forty and could be found often at DEAN'S.

Songs

Don't diss those songs--I loved them all!  Along with "Teenager in Love."  Some folks our age sang "Monster Mash" in my UU church for Halloween (Unitarian Universalists).  It was a favorite for lots of us.

Jessica Borzilleri
Gabe TC Omeara

You nailed it with Last Kiss. Along with Teen Angel and Tell Laura I Love Her, and perrhaps Leader of the Pack, they formed a musical genre "Death Rock" which in our parent's generation showed up in the movies as "Old Movie Disease." A beautiful teenage  Liz Taylor dying at the end with her make up on.

And we got the answer to the musical question: "Who wears short shorts?

Also Al Kooper and his era of Blood, Sweat and Tears were a talented group who I remember even from the Blues Project days. Another group with great talent and Julliard training were the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble.

Murray

Murray Schwartz
Royal Teens and Short Shorts

I remember we had "The Royal Teens" who had a hit with "Short Shorts" at one of our dances.  The group included Al Kooper who would later become famous with Bob Dylan and founded Blood Sweat and Tears. Also, tThere was an acapella black vocal group on the bill called "The Tymes". They sang a couple of songs including "So much in love" which became a big hit in 1963.

As we stroll along together
Holding hands, walking all alone
So in love are we two
That we don't know what to do
So in love (doo, so in love)
In a world of our own (doo, so in love)

Do you remember "Last Kiss" by J Frank Wilson and the cavaliers?

"Well, where oh where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven
So I got to be good
So I can see my baby
When I leave this ol' world"

The car stalled and Bam!

The curious part is that the song was written by Wayne Cochran, who made a name for himself as "The White James Brown".  He never had a hit!

Steve Sfass Revisited

Ah yes. I remember one of the ideas I had previously forgotten. By the reactions to the Duprees, the Genies and Don & Juan I am reminded of all the music we loved in a great music era. Even beside the British invasion and Motown we had great stuff. But could we have a contest to nominate and elect the worst songs of our era. I would like to start the nominations with "Teen Angel" where she gets run over by the railroad train having made the critical error of trying to retrieve our very sad singer's high school ring, found crushed in her fingers tiiiight (tight as a 3 sylable lyric). Let's put on our thinking caps Class of '65 and come up with more. Murray

The Duprees

Tony Testa, one of the "new" Duprees was my guitar teacher in Long beach.  He played guitar with a group at a bar on the west side.  His drummer gave Sam Beck (my drummer in TC and the Boys) lessons also.  Tony is a gifted guitar payer and musician and has brought a lot of class to the present Duprees line up.

Don and Juan did live in Long Beach.  Thety were painters at times and actually painted the Rec Center around 1962.

WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT BY STEVE SFASS

DON'T CRITICIZE ME BUT I DO THINK WE NEED SOMETHING MORE ENTICING TO HAVE A LARGER TURNOUT FOR THE WEEKEND. I WAS THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR MY HIGH SCHOOL FOR TWENTY FIVE YEARS(LONG ISLAND CITY HIGH SCHOOL IN QUEENS) BEFORE I RETIRED AND HAVE A FEW SUGGESTIONS. LOOK THESE OVER AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. 1. WE COULD START OUT WITH RACES WITH OUR WALKERS( NO CHEATING LIKE PUTTING MOTORS ATTACHED). 2. FOR THE MALES WE COULD HAVE A CONTEST TO SEE WHO HAS THE MOST HAIR ON OUR HEADS. THE BODY DOESN'T COUNT. I ACTUALLY THINK I WOULD WIN IF WE INCLUDED THE BODY BECAUSE I HAVE HAIR GROWING OUT OF EVERY PART EXCEPT FOR MY HEAD! LUCKY ME!. 3. A GUESSING GAME THAT WOULD INCLUDE PUTTING NUMBERS ON A PIECE OF PAPER INTO A LARGE JAR. YOU WOULD BE GUESSING HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COMING TO THE REUNION BY ACCESS A RIDE BUS. 4. SAME SCENARIO BUT THIS TIME YOU GUESS THE PERSON THAT HAS THE MOST WRINKLES. 5 SAME SCENARIO BUT THIS TIME YOU HAVE TO GUESS HOW MANY TIMES THE WORD "OY" IS SAID DURING THE EVENING. I HAVE SO MANY OTHER INNOVATIVE EVENTS SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME IF YOU NEED MORE.

Clarence what a classy and touching story. I am proud to have been your classmate.

Harry you are a scream. Just for that I am having Jonah Hill come to our reunion and play the role of me as returning alum. Scarlett Johanson will be playing Cathy Ruth.

Susan my best guess is that "Duprees" is a trademark which like all trademarks may be assigned. No need for an original Dupree to be  in the act. I expect that the original Duprees not only saw the Pyramids along the Nile, but actually watched them being built. Perhaps Steve Schatz can get his IP department to provide us with a legal opinion. Murray

Murray Schwartz
Don & Juan

Michael Cohn brought to light the duo Don & Juan was living in Long Beach. He is correct because Don (Roland Trone) was the reason I came to live in "The Beach"! I grow up a military "Brat" and was living in Panama City in 1964. My brother, Arthur, worked at Laskas Flowers and was best friend to Roland, when they came visiting that summer. My father was transferred to Ft Walton Beach prior to that visit. We, having lived to many cities across the states, and Japan, were faced with going to a high school there with a graduating class of 16 in a segregated school. I asked my parents and my brother, if I could return with Arthur & Roland to finish my senior year in Long Beach. So, you all had to put up with me! Music has become a major part of my life after graduation!

Oh No!

I must have lived in a bubble--I didn't know any of this--who worked at what store, who owned which store, who lived where, individual names of popular singing groups--this is upsetting! I do remember the Duprees at a Jr. High dance, but I never knew their names. You Belong to Me has always been a favorite & I wanted to use it at my wedding for my first dance but I was too shy to ask the band. Well that was me, Miss Shy until I got to college!

Message to Cathy: Why not have someone ask Lauren's son for her contact info--he must be readily accessible now that he's an assemblyman!

Steve Schatz Big Time Entertainment

Steve was GO President who ran on the ticket to bring big time entertainment to our school functions. So we had the Duprees at a Fall dance and Linda Brown did a great inteview for the Tide. "See the Pyramids along the Nile....

Then came the Winter Carnival with Benny King formerly the Drifters lead singer crowning Carol Rippetoe as our Winter Carnival Queen. Benny of Spanish Harlem and other Lieber and Stoller hits.

Then the Prom. Shirelles with Mama Said, Soldier Boy and the haunting Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. The surprise was a man named Steve Depasse who was unreal at improvising lyrics. And he would up doing a duet with Billy Crystal which was one for the ages. As in Yogi Berra's "Who woulda thunk it!"

And we owe it all to Steve Schatz keeping his campaign promise. Murray

Gail and Barbara, your post about the Genies reminds me that Don & Juan also lived in Long Beach. Wikipedia says they were from Brooklyn, but I remember  and know for a fact that when I delivered Newsday on my bicycle route, they lived in the basement of  the Royal Danelli on Broadway (I think they or one of them was a super or janitor). One day when I was collecting I ran into them and they told me about their song which they said was going to be a hit. They invited me into the apartment and played it for me and sang it. It was  released in 1962 and was "What's Your Name" ("Is it Mary or Sue, O-o oo, do I stand a chance with you?").

I remember Celia Calloway in 4th grade. I went to her birthday party. I don't remember her living in Lido more than that year. She sang a duet with her Dad on The Ed Sullivan Show that year I think.

Phyllis Wolff

Phyllis Wolff
Jimmy Nelson, too

I think it's been mentioned before but we certainly can't leave out of this discussion Larry and Lee's dad, Jimmy Nelson, the creator of Farfel the Dog. Who can forget "N E S T L E S, Nestle makes the very best....Choc- late".

And if we're talking about summer residents, Dayton Allen the voice of Deputy Dawg, Heckle and Jeckle and the famous line, "Why not, Bubbie?" was a summer resident for at least a few years back in the early 60s.

Michael Cohn
Burl Ives's son

I can't remember his name: but he lived on our block (Belmont Ave.-- summers only, for several years.

My Memory

Thank you Franette, for the re-enforcement of my incredible memory about Barbara Wayne.  Lael Calloway had an older sister who was in our class.

David Richman
Bess Myerson

Gail,

I don't know Bess Myerson's daughter, but I took violin lessons from her sister at East School! I thought I knew everyone in our class but all these names are popping up that I never heard of (Cab Calloway's daughter, & Bess', etc.) I think I lived in a bubble.

Susan Propp
Bess Meyerson's daughter

Yes! Thank you!

Gail

Gail Schanker Rosenberg

According to Yahoo, Lael Calloway was born in 1949, so was at least a year behind us. Bess Myerson's daughter Barbara Wayne, from Myerson's first marriage, became Barra Grant after she was adopted by Myerson's second husband in 1962, according to Wikipedia.

Franette Sheinwald
Bess's daughter

Hey Gail, I'm pretty sure her first name was Barbara. My amazing memory is telling me her last name was Wayne.  Can somebody back me up on this?

David Richman
Hi to everyone.

I have not been to any reunions. Jay, my husband, and I will see you for our 50th. It will be wonderful. Thank you to all the people that are planning it. It is so appreciated. My memories of us goiing to Gino's, laurel luncheonette, Harry and max's, library, laurel theater, sports' night are good ones. And, of course, so many more. May 2015 will be here before we know it. We live in California, and I love it. Long Beach will always be where we are from.

Francine Yurman

David,

In addition to Rocky and Cab C,  Bess Meyerson and her daughter (do not remember her name) lived in Lido Beach, and the daughter attended Lido Elementary School for a short time. Does anyone remember her name?

Gail Schanker Rosenberg
Famous Classmates

We have been fortunate to have had some famous classmates.  I'm not talking about minor celebs, I mean Household Names. How many of you remember Lael Calloway?  Her father was Cab Calloway. He was a giant. Band leader, singer, actor, writer and humanitarian.

And what about our own Roxee?  Her dad was a World Champion, Rocky Graziano. He also scared the crap out of me one New Years Day at seven in the morning.  These guys had real and DESERVED fame.

David Richman
Barbara Sloan/Howie McGowan

I also "went steady" with him for very short while. That's why I recall his name.

Joan(Joni) Goldstein
Back Fence

I did say hi, Dave and we spoke between sets. I think it was a surprize for both of us. I was working at the Fillmore East and invited you to come see a show sometime, but I never saw you (unless I was too stoned when you came by). I spent a few years after that  as a roadie, doing lights and as a road Manager for a bunch of bands and wondered if I'd bump into you again. I was Livingston Taylor's road manager for a while and he used to do gigs at small colleges or sometimes clubs like the Back Fence.

Michael Cohn
Harold McGowan

His girlfriend was Mara Ginsburg!

Barbara Sloan
Joan Goldstein and Loretta Indiviglio

Great memory, Joan.  (Howie McGowan)

Loretta,

I was jealous that you were Billy's girlfriend, because he was so cute and I had a crush on him.

Elise Klein
BACK FENCE

Michael, it probably was The Back Fence. I performed there through most of my senior year and on and off for the next few years. Why didn't you say hello?

Jay Abromowitz saved my behind. I had Mrs. Abeles when I came down with "MONO". Remember that?  Anyway, she and I definitely had different perspectives on English. Thank God for getting sick. They assigned Mr. Abramowitz to tutor me while I was convalescing at home. He was the best! He was a wonderful teacher, and in the relaxed atmosphere of my home, he was the greatest. When I came back to school, he had me transferred to his class. The rest is all 'pomp and circumstance'.

David Richman
Harold McGowen

Harold went by name, Howie. Full name was Harold Francis Xavier McGowen Jr., and he did go to Catholic school.

Joan(Joni) Goldstein

There were 4 brothers I was Billy's friend and I guess girlfriend who remembers no I never dated Mike.

Loretta Indiviglio
Carol Spry

I remember both of the Mitchell boys.  I had a crush on Billy, the younger one.  He was adorable.  Loretta Indiviglio dated the older one, I think.  Loretta, am I correct on that?  I'm pretty sure McGowan's first name was Harold.  He lived a few houses away from me.  I thought he went to Catholic School.

Elise Klein
To: Bobby Viola--

Hi, Elise.  Thanks for remembering me and Belles GROUPIES.  HI EVERYONE!! THANKS for the memory jog!

Asked around the trivia circuit and NO COMFIRMATIONS about Alan................only possibilities that surfaced in the frontal lobe: Alan Smorack, Schwartz or Dillenback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Do you also remember around the counter Jay Krompier, Eli Haas, Ray Deniston ('65), Harry McGowan, Billy and Ray Mitchell, Rudi and Bobby Zitti,  Frank Morisano and Mike Townsend..........and don't forget Dave Nelson

RoseBen was before Belles

ANY MORE?

.... Translator: Carol Spry :-)))))

Carol Spry
Mrs. Abeles

Yes. Mickey, er...Murray, it is "Doris" Abeles.  All I remember about her class was that it was a lot of work and that Barbara Michiel sat in front of me.

Franette Sheinwald
Clothes

I remember Smorak's, Mickey. And Larry Richards on Park Avenue (I think his son was a grade behind us). I bought a lot of things at those two stores. Or my parents did, for me.  Gosh, I still remember some of the clothes I bought there and some of the styles.

Like when "Continental" style first came in. Pants had to have a buckle in the back, and slash pockets. Shirts a loop at the top and tails. There were a lot of loud shirt colors too as I recall.Of course, I was too chubby back then to really get into the styles.  Later Madras shirts and even shorts came in.

Do you recall the mohair sweaters on the girls (okay and at some point, guys too?).

I even had the good taste when I was about 13 to buy a light gray Nehru suit and a Cardigan (lapel-less) sport jacket.

Michael Cohn
Luncheonette trivia

Okay here's food for thought (no pun intended)

Which came first RoseBen's or Belle's?  The location was near Glamour Togs towards the middle of that strip center.

Gail

Gail Schanker Rosenberg

I sure do remember hanging out at Bell's

RoseBen Luncheonette

I have lost confidence after the infamous Wolfgang Margolies faux pas. But Elise I believe there was a time when the luncheonette near the Cozy Nook was RoseBen's. I could be wrong. I often am. Was the Alan--Alan Smorack? Sadly he died young in an automobile crash. His father and uncle owned Smorack's where school trendsetters bought their clothes. Murray

Murray Schwartz
Not Wolfgang

I defer to Franette and Michael Holiday Cohn. Too much firepower of smarts, research--holy librarian Batman--and good memories for me not to be persuaded that I am wrong. Was it "Denise" Abeles? NO it was "Doris."

Murray Schwartz
To: Bobby Viola--

Ronnie Zapia's mother owned Belle's Luncheonette on Park Ave. near the Cozy Nook.  Do you remember "hanging out" there with Steve Zoppel, Diane Nelson, Loretta Indiviglio, Marcy Kaye, Ronnie, Mattie Markel, and Alan (can't remembrer his last name) and me?

Elise Klein
Mr. Margolies

I second Michael.  It is definitely "Wolfred".  We librarians have our sources.

Franette Sheinwald

It was definitely Wolfred not Wolfgang, Mickey...uhm, Murray.

Michael Cohn
Michael Cohn

I remembered the Phyliss story with a chuckle. I believe Mr. Margolies was "Wolfgang" like Mozart.

Murray Schwartz
Mr. Margolies

Michael, I have information on Laura Hodes if you expect to run into Mr. Margolies again--she lives in North Miami Beach & will be at the reunion, as always. I recall Laura always saying how much she loved him. Janis lives in Los Angeles & Donna Selnick (are you reading this Donna?!) and/or Janie Samuels probably has her address.

Susan Propp
Mr. Margolies

Okay, I have to put a word in for my favorite teacher who probably many people didn't know or have: Mr. Margolies. Wolfred Margolies actually. I had him for four years of Latin but I think he also taught German. He had a sly, risque and sometimes cornball sense of humor, but also an incredible breadth of knowledge. He made the classics come alive, in more ways than one, instilled in me a great sense of love of all languages and etymology. He still ranks as one of my two favorite teachers of all time. including college and law school.

In fourth year Latin I sat behind Phyllis Ostrow who was both quite good in the class and as many will remember, very attractive and popular. One day I passed her a note which was innocently intended to complement her on class but unfortunately began, " Dear Phyllis, You don't know how hard it has been all year, sitting behind you..." Mr Margolies demanded to see the note, started to read it and cracked up.Then he read it to everyone - along with his own commentary - and continued for the rest of the year to mention it, frequently.

About 10 or 15 years ago I tracked him down (he lived in Island Park) and contacted him. He still remembered many of the people in our class and particularly asked me about Laura Hodes and Janis Forman who he was glowing about. I was very sorry at the time that I could not tell him anything about them.

Michael Cohn
Jay Abramowitz

He was an interesting guy.  Smart, very into the theater, if I remember.  He had his favorites and used to kid them mercilessly.  I kind of get him a lot more in retrospect.  Oy, does that mean I'm getting older??????

Eva Hoffmann
Jay Abramowitz

I liked Mr. Abramowitz, too.  But, it was also the year after I had Mrs. Abeles, so he was a change of pace.  I remember he once asked me who I had for English the previous year.  When I told him Mrs. Abeles, he said he thought so.  He could tell from my writing style.

Franette Sheinwald
Mr. Piazza

His daughter in law said he would

Barbara Sanders
Mr. Abramowitz was also one of the best.

!

Adrienne Rose
Jay Abramowitz

I have great memories of him. He was also a yeller & intimidated us a lot. I was so shy in HS but somehow I wound up really liking him. Requested him for a second year & got him again. He loved my writings so maybe I appreciated the positive feedback. I think he was a great teacher as well. How do others feel about him?

Hope Piazza is coming--I LOVED him, as did everyone else (voted favorite male teacher). He came to the 20th & it was so nice to see him. Anyone else still alive?

Susan Propp
Sima: Thanks for posting the picture of you and Mrs. Quinn.

She was a wonderful PE teacher.

Adrienne Rose
Michael Cohn

So Stein says let me call my goold old Uncle Joe Caruso. Piggy always called him Uncle Joe. Wernow was selling slices the next day and learning how the Conquistadors exploited the Aztecs. Murray

Murray Schwartz
Mr. Caruso

Mr. Caruso was the best. He made history come alive. I remember him standing on the desk playing out Columbus dicovering America. The boots were great, but I loved the mother in law stories. I also would cringe when one of the boys misbehaved and he'd grab them by the ear down the the principal's office.

Barbara Sanders
Mr. Caruso

I can still hear Mr. Caruso's deep voice, and picture his very olive skin. I remember the boots too!  I can also visualize him sitting on the front edge of his desk lecturing us. He WAS a wonderful teacher!

Gail Schanker Rosenberg

David, I have a vague memory of walking into a folk club in the West Village one night in the later  60s or EARLY 70s and seeing you playing guitar and singing. Maybe some Dave Van Ronk songs. Did that happen? And was it the Back Fence?

Back then I'd run into people all the time in Washington Square Park. Billy before he mad it big and was sitting in semi despair on a bench. Ron Gertz stumbling through the park stoned after an all nighter. I'd see Linda Brown inside the halls of the Main Building of NYU. And when I was working at the Button Store on MacDougle Street, lots of people still in high school who I remembered would come in on a weekend.

Michael Cohn
Mr. Caruso

One of my favorite teachers.  He pushed you to work hard.  And how about, if memory serves me right, my grandmother's combat boots!!!

Adrienne Rose
Mr. Caruso

Mr. Caruso had a unique way of explaining historyal events and conflicts in unique ways  we could understand.

"Take a fella like Stein here. Stein owns a pizzeria and Wernow walks in. And Wernow says I wanna slice. So Stein says I don't sell slices, only full pies...."

Michael Cohn
Teachers - pro and con

That's interesting, David.  I liked Mr. Bernstein a lot.  He was nice to me--kidded me a lot which I really liked.  Maybe it was because of my dad and because I babysat for his kids.  Also, I loved math and he could see that.  Who knows why we like one teacher and not another...?

On the other hand, I have bad memories of Mr. Lee--and I had him for 2 years!  One thing I remember is him organizing a fight between me and some other girl who I was furious with because she had been mean to me.  I don't know if that really happened (hard to imagine a teacher letting that take place), or if he just threatened to do it, or if I just imagined the whole thing.  Geez those were awful years--I was always furious or hurt.

Jessica Borzilleri
MISS QUINN'S CITIZENS

Miss Quinn was the principal at Lido and the Annex. She was wonderful, caring and never condescending. She exemplified what an educator should be and what we don't see enough of today.  She always referred to us as 'citizens'.  I was citizen Richman. I don't believe we had a citizen Kane in our classes.                                                                                                                           Now, Mr. Caruso was a whole other thing. He was very intimidating.  Although, if you took the time to look past the lower east side accent and the booming voice, you'd find another teacher who cared about us deeply.             Does anyone remember going on a class trip to NYC with Mr. Lee? That day culminated with dinner in China Town. We were very lucky to have had some wonderful teachers.  Mr. Bernstein was not in that group.

David Richman
Murray''s story

Great story Murray!! I got a visual even though I only took French with Docta Thamuels. Loved your award for Mark!

Susan Propp
Mr. Piazza

I was picking my grandson up from kindergarten today, and met Mrs. Piazza.

She is Mr. Piazza's daughter in law. He's doing great and he's 81 years old.

He will probably be at our reunion.

Barbara Sanders
Dr. Andino/PJ Rose

Had a great chat a while back with PJ. He reminded me of the time I was in deep trouble with Dr. Andino for not responding when he callled on me in class. The problem was that he was calling on Twartz Muray and I did not recognize the name. Dr. A kept repeating Twartz Muray louder each time and then went to my desk to threaten to send me to Dr. Twartz's office. Ah ha--the light bulb went off--I was heading to Twartz Norman's office.

PJ also expressed his gratitude to two classmates, both selfless healers, able physicians and wholly decent human beings. Mark Rothstein and David Sherman. I remember David in 6th grade doing the best Louis Armstrong impression since Billy Crystal. When I recall Mark I think of our senior awards in the Echo Yearbook and how conventional they were. Prettiest--Cheyrl Strauss, Most Likely to Suceed--Brook Horowitz and Steven Schatz--Class couple--No clue.  With Mark I would like to present a new class award--The Schweitzer/Avalon Award, to a man possessing the intellect of Albert Schweitzer and the hair of Frankie Avalon. God bless you both.

Haahaahaa the kids today are all at home on Facebook, texting and playing video games.

Eva Hoffmann

For some reason I was out in the parking lot. I don't know what I would have been doing there at that time, but the moment is, as with everyone else, indelibly engraved in my mind.  Morty Landowne rushed out of the building and told me. I even remember where I was standing.

Turning to a possibly more pleasant memory,  I was thinking the other day of Friday or Saturday evenings outside of Beach Burger, between Long Beach and Monroe Blvds. Seems like whenever the weather was nice there would be Seniors, Juniors and Sophmores eating there, standing outside talking, meeting up and going somewhere else. There's still a luncheonette there, but I've never seen any current Long Beach kids there. I wonder where they go now. It's not Ginos, and Cozy Nook is gone. So is Geckers (at least changed hands) near the old high school on Lindell. I never see groups of kids at those places. (then again, maybe I'm just not out, "hanging" when they are).

Memories

Interesting, there was a Miss Quinn and a Mrs. Quinn....

On the day Kennedy was shot, I heard it in the school and went to tell the marching band who were out on the playing field practicing.  It's something I've never forgotten.

Thanks Margo.

For some reason I kept thinking Ordway, who I believe was a PE teacher, after finding out it wasn't Mrs. Quinn. I couldn't find her in our yearbook and now I know why.

Adrienne Rose
Kennedy

Yes, we were in the same class. After David came in and we all yelled at him, the principal announced over the loud speaker that he was in critial condition. You could hear a pin drop as we were getting on the busses. I went home with Renee Pollack. The thought of being alone was to much.

Barbara Sanders
A fine mess, indeed

Miss Ordway was the gym teacher who died in a car accident some time after freshman year..

Margo Caven
Kennedy

Barbara Sanders, were you in my history class? I also distinctly remember David Teitelbaum (spelled like mine) announcing "Hey, the ol' president was shot" & he was practically laughing. I went home & wrote an account of that day, quoting David--still have it. I had Marinette practice & when we went out on the field, the band was practicing & hadn't heard the news. I kept thinking that someone ought to tell them. When I was waiting for my mother to pick me up, I was leaning against a front pole & Mr. Stark asked me if I was holding the pole up. I should have answered "No, it's holding me up" because that was probably true. I was so absorbed in the aftermath, wondering how a modern day president could be assassinated--a term I only associated with history.

Susan Propp
What a Fine Mess!!!

Thanks Barbara and Gail.  I only remembered Mrs. Quinn.  Lido School is too far back.  Glad she's alive and well.  Anyone know which teacher died when she drove off a bridge?

Adrienne Rose
Oh boy….

Addie Quinn was our High School Gym teacher, as well as the Coach of our Cheerleading Squad....

Elyse and Jessica

You need to check your yearbooks.  She was our PE instructor and I believe she was killed while crossing over a bridge sometime after we graduated HS.

Adrienne Rose
Miss Quinn

Miss Quinn WAS an older lady.  She was Lido Elementary School's principal.  I don't know when she started, but she was the principal for quite a long time.

Jessica Borzilleri

I remember a Miss Quinn as an older lady who was our guidance counselor.

Elyse Goodstein
Miss Quinn

I remember a Miss Quinn that was our phys ed teacher. Is that who you're talking about?

I also remember being in Mr. Weinstein's history class when David Titlebaum came in saying the President was shot. We all thought he was joking, and yelled aat him to stop saying such a horrible thing.

Barbara Sanders

I remember Miss Quinn, but not from elementary school.  I think she was, maybe, a math teacher?

Does anyone remember Mr. Graff socking someone in the nose on the day that President Kennedy was shot?

Eva Hoffmann
Miss Quinn and Miss Sommerville

Yes, Miss Quinn and Miss Sommerville were good friends with my mom and often came to our house.  They were decent, kind ladies.

FARM Birds

Murray, I learned this in Mr. Stanger's class.  He was my favorite teacher--I loved him!  He was funny and challenging and kind to me.  Mr. Eaton was not.  (Mr. Stanger died a while ago, BTW.)

You got the FARM part right--the last one was "birds."  Duh.

When I finally finished my BA at College of William and Mary in 2009 (started in 1965 at Queens College but dropped out, continued at University of Toronto part time, finished at W & M--very late bloomer), those categories were a joke.  The Biology course I took really drove home how much things had changed since 1965--whole new categories of living things, and I've forgotten them already.

Jessica Borzilleri
Doris Abeles

How many of our 83 Excellents turned into 93 Goods with Dr. Schanker? Murray

Murray Schwartz
Mrs. Abeles

She was a tough grader but an excellent teacher. I even took her creative writing elective senior year knowing it would probably lower my average.

Judy Parks and I, home from college, visited her right after she had a baby. I'm sure she still called us Miss Parks and Miss Goldstein.

Joni G.

Murray,      I have no idea if Beryl's mom's name was Dora.  I'm sure we would have called her Ms. Kreitzberg.  I can't believe you remember her occupation.

Michael,

Doris Abel is one of the only teachers I remember from high school.  I can still picture her.  She was very cold and a really hard marker.  I always did well in English, and still can't believe she gave me a 78 or something that she gave Penny Eisenberg an 80 on!

I AM CLASS MORON- Insects, Arachnids, Crustations and Many Legged Animals (millipedes)

Define Science: That branch of knowledge which deals with facts and ideas, reasonably arranged and proven to be true by experimentation.

Matty Miller was the wag who wanted to lock the door.

I went backstage several months ago at Billy C's show and did a Bob Murphy imitation which is what I was doing in Doris Abeles class. She called you Mr. Cohn and called me Mr. Schwartz. For some reason she called Steven Schatz "Schatz."

Mr. Eaton's annual joke: "What do you get when you cross a hummingbird with a doorbell?" A humdinger.

Do you remember Ms. Barry taking attendance. Cohn, Cushing , Forscher, Gerber, Gertz... Schwartz, Stein and Wernow. I do remember them all. Mickey

Murray Schwartz

That was supposed to be, sports riffs and routines. Was it Bill Mazer?

Before this goes on too long (you're the second one, it's Cohn, not Cohen. My greatgrandfather lost the "e" (and a few bags) sneaking across some Eastern European border.

Michael Cohn

Hey, Murray (feels strange calling you that and not Mickey) even I forgot that campaign slogan. Were you the wag who added, "And lock the door!"

Nor do I remember you ever being shy or afraid to talk. Maybe in Mr. Eaton's class, but not in English with Mrs. Ablese where you sat right up front. Or your riffs and routines

Speaking of Mr. Eaton, I still remember that the best maple syrup in the world comes from the Green Mountain State and the 7 identifying characteristics of Living Things from the mnemonic : "General Motors Is Fine, Really Really" (growth, motion, irritability, respiration, reproduction."  He had others too but my own personal R: remembering, has taken a hit lately.

I remember your mom taking  a group of us into the City for your birthday, to see "Green Mansions" at Radio City Music Hall.

Elise Klein
Michael Holiday Cohen

Michael Holiday, I remember "Put MHC in the Treasury" and also one of your yearbook inscriptions.

I too remember two great memeories that you brought up, the polio vaccine extravaganza and Hurrican Donna when the ocean met the bay. For the former, I still remember my pin: "Polio Pioneer 1954"  and the fact that I got 3 placebos (we called them "water") and thus had to get six shots. With Hurrican Donna we got evacuated in a Nassau County Police Boat right on my block and  sailed out the storm. John Steinbeck gives a great account of Hurricane Donna in his engaging book "Travels with Charlie."

Michael, I wish I got to know you better in the seventh grade but we were in Mr. Eaton's science class and I was afraid to talk.

One note to Phyliss. When you did the Pony you looked like a thoroughbred race horse. When I tried they were taking me to the glue factory.

Anyone remember Ms. Goldstein and her typing class. Great hair but very scarry. Murray

Murray Schwartz
Phyllis Levine

I remember almost missing our trip upstate to your bungalow, because I got locked in Penny Eisenberg's bathroom.  You had a brother named Paul?

Elise Klein
Central School

I remember getting the polio shot, and I don't know why i wasn't exempt as i had polio at age 2.

I moved to Long Beach and began 4th grade at Central School sometime in October. I recall nervously standing in front of the classroom as Miss Menzel introduced me to my classmates. Our 4-1 classroom would bulge with up to 42 kids that year. My other memory of that day occurred during recess (or lunch) when the girls congregated in the playground on the metal jungle gym and chained swings. The most popular girl appeared to be DeeDee Rosenberg with her brown corkscrew curls and bright eyes. The class "pariah" was a very skinny girl who, daily, wore the same straight grey skirt with a few short pleats sticking out around one knee. One of the other girls said to her, "Why do you wear the same skirt every day?" I felt bad for her but did not want to align myself with a social outcast. I guess this was a 1950's version of bullying. Her retort was, "My mother bought me three."

Adrienne, it was an earlier hurricane. We were in elementary school as I was living on Farrell street.

Hurricane Donna

How well I remember that one Elyse.  I still have pictures  of my siblings standing in the waist-high water. The year was 1960.  We're reminiscing about this on the Facebook site called: IF YOU GREW UP IN LONG BEACH NEW YORK IN THE 50'S, 60'S & 70'S

Talk about picking our brains.  Have a peek.

East School dance lessons

I remember having dance lessons with Don Pons in the East School gym. He and his wife were quite strange. I was painfully shy, and it did force me to talk to girls for the first time.

Harry Briffel
Polio vaccine

I remember every minute of it. We were lined up waiting to be injected with a large hypodermic needle. it was horrifying. Almost as scary as being told to hide under our desks in case of a nuclear attack.

Has anyone else wondered why we remember those two events so clearly? Could have been yesterday.

Beryl Kreitzberg
Thanks Elise Klein!

Hi Elise.

Thank You for remembering me when I was dancing the night away! I ponied, strolled, slopped, mashed potated, twisted, monkeyed, and bristol stomped all through high school and was honored when I was voted Best Dancer in the Senior Poll! Wish I could still shake a tail feather like I used to...

And Elise, I remember you as a very good friend who I could always count on to tell me like it really was!

Hope this note brings back good memories for all of the Class of '65. Keep on dancing!

Gamma Globulin shots

Speaking of horrors. Anyone remember the hurricane that came through when the bay met the ocean?  Had to have been sometime between 1-5 grade. I was living in the canals on Farrell street. We were jumping off our stoops into the deep water. Then everyone had to get these shots to prevent hepatitis. Speaking of big needles!  Elyse Goodstein Jensen

Another Cold War Memory

Along with "duck and cover" and Nike missiles paraded through the streets, does anyone still have their "dogtag" which was distributed when our class was in 2nd or 3rd grade? The embossed aluminum tag was on a chain. The tag contained your name, address, birthdate and a J or C or P to indicate religion. I don't know if I still have mine. My brother (LBHS '67) told me that the purpose for this "dogtag" was so that after whatever happened and the dust settled,  you could be identified and be buried according to your religion's practices. I don't know his source for this information.

That day has been ingrained in my mind forever. My father had walked my brother & I to Central school. When it was my turn, I grabbed the edge of the gurney & when the the nurses tried to lift me up, they couldn't understand why I was "stuck." After several tries & watching their frustration, for some strange reason I felt sorry for them & sort of showed them where my hands were. Next thing I knew I was on the gurney! There was an older girl lying there quietly with her whole "buttocks" (thanks Michael!) exposed & I was shocked. Afterwards, I was crying & made my father carry me (& brother too) home.

Susan Propp
Polio Vaccine

Michael,

I remember the Polio vaccine event like it was yesterday. I was in 3rd grade and had Mrs. Polin (Lido Elementary).  We were told we were going to have an injection and that some of us would receive the real deal and others the placebo (did not use that word of course). When I heard this scary news, I got up, blotted out of the room, and hid somewhere in the building. No one could find me. They called my mother to come to school and be part of the search. When I was finally found they actually put me on a gurney and held me down to give me the shot. So yes it is a vivid memory for me!

More childhood terrors

Speaking of 1950s fear and angst, does anyone else remember lining up for polio shots? We had moved from the Canals to the center of town and I remember waiting in a line that stretched half way round the block to the gym/auditorium at Central School for a polio shot. Not the sugar cubes they used later, but a Frankenstein sized hypodermic that they injected into my tender young "buttocks" (that's when I learned that word and never forgot it). Then I got a lollipop.

Michael Cohn
Thanks Murray!

I loved your memory piece about hiding under desks. . .Keep em coming!

I remember the stroll and remember Phyllis Levine as being a great dancer.

Jessica Borzilleri

Jessica, I understand your fright. We were the generation that did not just believe we would be extinguished in a thermo nuclear blaze, we KNEW it. We had Atomic Cafe, where an animated Tommy the Turtle taught us that if we saw the flash just duck and cover. We learned that Godzilla was a metaphor for the Atomic Bomb. Even Ed Sullivan had a piece on what a nuclear war would be like. And On the Beach showed us life after. I was amazed we could all crawl out from under our desks and do the Mexican Hat Dance.

We also did the stroll and Ken Leishner was the best stroller in the class (it may have been your mother's 5th grade class) and could have gone to American Band Stand. Phyliss Ostrov did the best Pony in the seventh grade at Long Beach Junior High School and Reformatory. I was then and still am a dancing klutz.

So remember Mr. McAvoy while you sit under your desk waiting for the Russian Migs to bomb us, "no talking and no gum chewing (I suppose the Mig pilots could follow the trail of Juicy Fruit smell on our breath and hone right in. )

As Paul Simon observed: "Its a wonder I can think at all." Murray

Nike base

Jessica and Murray,

I lived at 291 Blackheath Road until high school (towards the end of the street) smack across from the nike base. I remember seeing the army soldiers driving down our street often. I also remember the big hill  (at least it seems big because we were small) directly across from my house and when it snowed we all used it for our sleds.

Gail Schanker Rosenberg

Good remembering, Susan Propp. Mr. Meyers was my father, Judy & Laura sisters, Jeanne & Elaine Steinberger - step sisters. Renee Rausch , close cousin. All sisters and cousin, alive and well! We're mostly all living either in Colorado or California .

I do remember Evelyn Collette and the first day she got on the school bus. She must have been terrified. The bus was a whole trip unto itself!

Deborah Meyers
Nuclear Threat

Mickey, I have so often related the story to people of troop carriers (loaded) coming down Blackheath Road in front of my house (I always waved to the troops) and Nike missiles pulled down Park Avenue in the Memorial Day parade.  Those were crazy times.  I had dreams of being a singer in those days but could never get up the nerve to go to the base and offer to "entertain the troops."  Thank God!

Then I saw Failsafe which scared the begeezus out of me.  I realized that a bomb hitting NYC would melt and sink Long Beach immediately, so we were gonners either above or below our desks.   It's kind of like plastic and duct tape now.  (Do you want to be called Murray now?  I'm Jessica these days, btw.)

Jessica Borzilleri
Gail

Yes Gail, Evelyne was French and we were all helping her with her English.  Don't know the Spanish girl you're referring to.  Thought I'd throw Evelyne in there for the mix.  By the way, there was a Linda Quinto in our class.  No heads and tails of a Pinto.

Adrienne Rose

Linda Pinto!  That's it!

Jessica Borzilleri
Gail Schanker

Alas dear dear Gail, You may be having a senior moment on your way to the moonlight village!! At least I don't remember it.  But I do recall playing leafy green vegetables in our nutrition play. I recall that everything they said was good for us now raises our cholesterol (the LDLs) 85 points or makes us take beta blockers for our blood pressure or without propoer handling can give us food born illnesses which can be fatal--so check with your doctor.

They worried about our being wiped out in a raging nuclear disaster, so under the desks we went in a school walking distance from a nike base, but ironically the cafeteria was the closest thing to a death threat we ever had. All the best, Murray

If so I can not take credit for this revelation, it was Laurie Miller.

Lido Elementary

You've all brought back such fond memories. Did anyone recognize themselves in the Central school kindergarten grad pic?  That was Mrs Kohut's class. Appears several of us then went to the annex school before going to Lido Elementary. I remember having Mrs. Millstein, Mrs. Polin, Miss Farrell, And Mr. Lee before I moved to FL for a few years. I returned in 9th grade. I don't remember first grade teacher. I do remember those air raid drills. Like sitting on the floor would save us.   Elyse Goodstein Jensen

Spanish Girl

Jessica, I was friendly with a girl from Venezuela (we're talking HS, right?) who was temporarily relocated to the US related to her father's business. We went to the World's Fair  (ah, what a memory!) several times together (out of my 8 trips), & I seem to recall a going away party for her when she had to return to Venezuela. I feel sad that I can't remember her name. Was that who you were thinking of? She may have spoken English from the start, not sure.

Evelyn Collette/Siegel contacted me through Classmates.com some years ago (I try not to go on Classmates anymore) so she's still around if anyone wants to try to contact her.

Susan Propp
Jessica Borzilleri

Of course I remember Miis Rose Meyers. She was the sweetest human being on earth. I wwnt to the annex school and had Miss Meyers and the very tall Joan Bailey. Miss Effie was the music teacher. Marcus Millet played Johnny, the title role in our play Johnny and the Journey Cake. Arlene Allshack played the Journey Cake. Point Lookout's Richard Miller and Barry King played the fox and wolf, Beth Greenhouse played a cat and I, Raucus the Crow, sat under Miss Myers desk and refused to perform. Surprised  I never joined actor's equity.

Later my teachers were Mrs. Borzilleri (you remember her) and Mr. Lee both great teachers. I never thoght our cold war air raid drills would protect us from Russian MIGS and wondered why we sat under our desks with gym teacher Tom McAvoy shouting to us "NO TALKING." Hugs, Murray f/k/a Mickey

A Memory of Lido

I can take Jessica's memory of the quonset hut school back one more step.  My family lived in Lido for a short period in the early '50's.  I have a tiny memory of going with my mother to look at what was probably a kindergarten that was being run in one of the pink barracks buildings that were still standing in Lido. My mother chose not to send me to that kindergarten and we moved soon after. I went directly into 1st grade elsewhere. When I was in mid-2nd grade, we moved back to LB and I went into West School.

Franette Sheinwald
Elise Klein

Hi Elise, We had all the same teachers. Miss Millstein used to wear plastic shirt sleeve protectors and loved the Brooklyn Dodgers. Miss Bailey was our LASS teacher in the newly introduced DPP--dual progress plan. LASS was language arts and social studies. She had to have been 6 feet tall. Now Ronnie Zappia was the niece of Greg Stiefman one of Long Beach's really talented stage actors. During Pioneer Week Ronnie was photographed in the pioneer house that Mr. Mitchelow built with the help of students far more talented than I. Ronnie was working the spinning wheel and made it into Newsday.

Do you remember Mr. Rothberg?  He wrote our graduation poem "Night."

I never thought Lido School prepared us for the days ahead. We went from an especially friendly and gracious place (thank you Miss Quinn) to something more akin to a juvenile detention center. Perhaps it was the LB School Board's answer to hormones. Anyway all the best, Murray

Murray Schwartz

Jessica,

I think I did attend the annex. I will ask my mom. I came to Lido after Kindergarten at Central School. I had Ms. Berman for first grade. I still have my report card. We must have all gone to the annex if in fact we were in Lido by first grade.

Gail, Mickey and Elise

OK, I remember kindergarten or first grade with Mrs. Meyer(s).

Did you go to the annex before Lido--the quanset hut school?  I think I did for a year or two before they built the new school.  And I remember I used to walk around the area where the quanset hut was--I found things like pencils there that felt like ancient artifacts.

Mrs. Grasso bored and scared the heck out of me.  That was not a good year.  And I had Mr. Lee for 5th AND 6th grade.

Jessica Borzilleri
Lido Elementary School

Gail, Jessica and Murray,

I remember the 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Millstein and the 3rd grade teacher, Miss Effie, who married and became Mrs. Cavasino (or something like that).  The 4th grade teacher was Mrs. Grasso (blond hair).  Diane Nelson was in my class, as was Roxee Graziano.  I'm still friends with Diane.  Jessica's mom, Mrs. Borzillieri was my 5th grade teacher.  Ronnie Zappia and Marcy Kaye were in my class.  I'm still friends with Ronnie.  I heard Marcy passed away.  The 6th grade teacher for everything except for Science and Math, was Miss Bailey.

Ed Bruno RIP

In looking at the In Memorry page I just recalled that I may have been one of the last of our classmates to have seen Eddie Bruno. He was with a group of youths who were doing forestry (cutting down trees --as Eddie recalled to me) and the group was attending a Union College football game in Schnectady, NY. I ran into Eddie and sat and chatted for the entire game. It seems like only a short time later that I heard he was killed in Vietnam. I did not know him that well at LBHS but had he survived Vietnam I realized that day that he would grown up into a darn good adult. God rest his soul. Murray a/k/a "Little Mickey" Schwartz

Meeting Long Beachites where you least expect to

Phyllis, this reminds me of meeting a Long Beach couple while I was living in Italy.  Back in the early 70's, my husband was stationed in Avellino, Italy.  We were shopping in a store and I heard people speaking English. That was surprising enough, but you can't miss the NY accent. I asked the lady where she was from. She said a small town on Long island. I said me too, I 'm from Long Beach.  She was from Lido Beach. I asked what she doing in Italy. She said her husband was on  sabitical and they were staying with family.  He was a teacher at LBHS. I said I graduated from there and asked his name. It was Mr. Ritaccio. Anyone remember him?  He was a language teacher. I never had him, but I think he taught Spanish.  He was also the advisor to the Latin Society.  Since they didn't have many English speaking friends, we included them in our military gatherings of friends and family (parties).

From the initial message about our 50th Reunion, I have been nostagically following the website updates, viewing the photos and reminiscing about those special high school days (thought my memory leaves a lot to be deisred, lol). Yesterday, the most incredibe thing happened and I feel compelled to share it with you all.

I have a gift shop in Texas and, yesterday, a lady came in my store. When she inquired about a particular item, I recognizef that she had a New York accent so I commented on it and she said yes, she was from NY. I told her that I was also & from Long Island. She said she was too...& from Long Beach. I was amazed and said I graduated from LBHS. She quickly concurred that she too had done so. I then asked her what year? to which she replied 1965! I was totally shocked & amazed. Her name is Marian Cummings. She is in the area visiting her son and just curiously stopped in my shop!

Now, what are the odds of that happening?? After almost 50 years running into a fellow LBHS graduate from the Class of '65 in Texas....Probably better odds winning the lottery!!

I thought this would be of interest in light of our upcoming reunion and the rarity of such an occurence. What a small world it really is.

I also want to take this opportuniy to say to the team putting all of this together that I appreciate your efforts. You are doing an awesome job (as always). Thanks!
